LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 5.5 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 50’s

The lake conditions have remained much the same since my last report. The surface temp has dropped by 1 degree and the lake has dropped .1 feet. Bass fishing is fair. A lot will change over this week with the cold weather. Once the weather settlers the fishing will be better but expect the fish will move deeper so water temperatures will be critical. Find the warmer waters. The areas around Browns Bridge and above are continuing to show signs of turnover. The lower lake looks like it is in the process of turning over as well. Big changes are coming as we are due to get some cold weather over the next few days, and then seasonal temperatures afterwards. The fish are still spread out both in the mouths of the creeks and further back in as well, but I believe this cold front will actually make fishing better after it passes and we get into more seasonal December temperatures. The patterns should change and we should see the ditch bite really pick up in shallower water. The schooling bite has been minimal this week but still present in the backs of creek pockets around daylight and again in the afternoon at times. Try a jerk bait or a Sebile on the schooling fish. If the fish do school and are chasing smaller bait fish, or you are having a hard time getting the fish to commit to swimbait or jerk bait offerings, try a spy bait. Count it down and work it slowly. A Picasso ShakeDown Head with a finesse worm and a Chattahoochee jig are still good for some bites on clay and rock points as well as in the brush. The spoon bite has once again been very good over the last week. We are finding spoon fish out in 30 to 60 feet at the mouths of ditches, as well as further back in some cases at different times of the day. The spoon bite has definitely been our dominant pattern this past 3 weeks and seems to be consistent every day in terms of its presence. The depth the fish are holding and their relevant activity levels vary day to day. The bite is always there, but some days it is better than others that's just fishing. If you want to learn the deep bite, now is a great time to do so! I also look for the ditch bite to be here after the cold front passes more to come on this one. Here is a list of my upcoming open dates in December: 8, 13, 14, 15, 18, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31. Give me a call and let's get out and have some fun.

Striper fishing is fair. Not a lot has changed this week. However, the cold temperatures should improve the fishing as we get back to winter pattern. Look for the fish and bait to move deeper as the cold fronts move through this weekend. Once the water temperature stabilizes the fish should follow the bait into the creeks. It is always tricky trying to predict what stripers will do as the weather changes. The key is; be flexible and key on the bait. Be prepared to fish with a variety of baits using both down rods and free lines. If you are having trouble finding the fish pull a combination of free lines, planner boards and down rods in areas with a high concentration of bait fish. In addition, keep someone on the front deck casting a buck tail jig as you pull baits. Use split shots on the free lines and vary the distance behind the boat and planner boards to cover a wide area both horizontally and vertically in the water column. Vary the speed on your trolling motor from .7 to 1.0 MPH. The Umbrella rig can also be used a search tool. Always keep your eyes on the water for Sea Gulls as they are excellent tools in finding feeding stripers. The water temperature is currently in the mid to high 50’s. The water is lightly stained in the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 5.59 feet below full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site.

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s
    website, http://www.laniercrappieanglers.net/

Water temperature is in the mid fifties and dropping. So far, we have been enjoying moderate temperatures for fishing, and as a bonus, this past Sunday we had a Super Moon. That means that the moon was 7% larger and 16% brighter. A combination of full moon and above normal water temp resulted in a really strong bite. If the water temperature drops significantly with the approaching cold weather, the bite will slow down until the fish adjust, after which it will pick back up. The up side of cold weather is that the bigger fish tend to move to docks with structure, which will hopefully bring them out of hiding. Submerged stand alone brush piles in fifteen to twenty five foot depths should continue to be your main target. Your downscan will help you find the brush piles and let you determine the depth of the fish suspended on the brush. If you want to fish the south side of the lake, Four Mile Creek should be high on your list. If you enjoy trolling, try long lining or tight lining as they are also effective methods this time of year.
