LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 5.1 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS ARE MUCH COLDER AND HEAVILY STAINED. 50’S DOWN LAKE AND 40’S UP LAKE.

Happy New Year everyone! I hope y'all enjoyed a safe and happy Holiday season and I wish you all the best for 2018! It got cold! And so far, the fish don't seem to mind. The lower lake has really cleared up in most places indicating the end of the turnover. There is still some stain in the creeks in some areas, but overall the water on the lower end is looking much better. The ditch bite seems to be largely on hold of late. We have been doing better on steeper rock points and banks on the main lake as well as in the creeks This week, a Picasso Shake Down head/green pumpkin worm combo along with a Chattahoochee Jig have done well. We have been presenting these baits very slowly in these steep rock areas. We have caught fish this week from 10 feet deep all the way out to 64 feet. It just depends on the spot and the activity level of the fish. So, stay flexible. When the wind is up, try your SPRO Little John DD on the rocks as well for some fish. Don't expect a lot of bites, but some good ones. Don't miss the opportunity to throw a SuperSpin in the same places as well. Keep checking on the ditches as they will be back there in the near future, they just seem to be taking a break at the moment. It's a great time to learn winter fishing! Following is a list of my upcoming open dates January: 9(AM), 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, 25. Give me a call and let's get out and catch some fish!

Striper fishing is fair. The extreme cold temperatures has kept us off the Lake this past week. Watching Football and celebrating the New Year with friends and family was the ticket for us last week. The forecast is for warmer temperatures this week which should allow us to get back on the Lake. Look for the Stripers in the back of the creeks busting Threadfin’s and roaming the flats looking for gizzard shad. Take both medium shiners, blueback herring and a few gizzard shad and deploy free lines and planner boards. Start in the middle of the creeks and work your way to the back of the creek. Fish where you find the highest concentration of bait. Pull your bait shallow in the early morning and move to the flats on the sun warmed flats in the afternoon. If you find deep bait (30 to 50 feet) look for one or two fish close to the bait stop and deploy your down rods as close to the bait as possible. Give these areas 10 to 15 minutes and if you do not get a bite move and continue your search. If you are on fish and they will not bite, try jigging a small spoon and powering reeling a Herring. Another option is to try to get a reaction by trolling an umbrella rig as close to the fish as possible at 3.0 to 3.5 MPH. Fish the areas with the highest concentration of bait fish. Six Mile Creek, Four Mile Creek, Flat Creek, Shoal Creek, River Forks Park, Holly Park and Gainesville Creek are good places to start your search. The water temperature is in the mid to high 40’s and the lake is 5 feet below full pool. The water is clear on the main Lake and lightly stained in the creeks. Happy New Year! If you are an avid fisherman, this is not the weather we would prefer to start out the year! However, it is January……. I have reached out to a number of my fishing buddies to see if they’ve braved the conditions to hit the water, and it was a unanimous NO ! The last day several of us were on the water was this past Saturday during our monthly club , just before the coldest temps blew in. Fishing was fair, at best. If I am to guess, water temperatures right now are in the mid forties, perhaps lower. Also a guess, is that the fish have moved to deeper brush piles and deeper docks, from the middle of the creeks toward the backs of creeks, and also the main river channel docks. In addition, in this weather, they tend to hold tight to the brush and don’t move much, so it is critical to place the bait in front of their faces, they are not willing to chase it. You can find the fish with your Lowrance electronics and it will probably be easier to fish them vertically. So, if you’ve got good cold weather gear and are willing to brave the elements, feel free to give me a call with a report, and I will pass it along!

Stay safe on the water and wear your life jacket.
