    Inshore Cold Water Fishing Report!

Winter has arrived with an unbelievable cold fury to Savannah’s coast. With us still having nice days in between the almost freezing ones our captains are able to catch some nice fish at least some of the time. I guess you could say, “It’s a bite on some days and it’s a bite off on others!” Trying to plan, which days are off and which days are on, is the big problems. So with that being said, “We still got fish! It’s we don’t have a dependable bite all of the time!” Heck, what does this sound like? Just like fishing with a sometimes touch of catching!

If you planning to do a little inshore fishing for spotted sea trout I suggest trying deep holes. The smarter fish headed way down under right before the real cold water temps set in and have stayed there. Now the bite isn’t going to be regular it’s going to be a very slow take. So you have to be patience and give them a lot more time than normal to eat! The best live bait and most likely the only bait is going to be cold loving mud minnow. For those that like going artificial I suggest using small paddle or screw tails threaded on to 1/8 ounce jig. If planning on fishing with these small jigs using 8 pound test main line is the best main line. (Monofilament) However, if you don’t want to down size, ¼ jigs threaded with flukes, paddle, and screw tails will get the job done. Working your lure as slow as possible will give you the best chance for a hook up. Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charters did in fact catch some nice keeper and undersized trout while fishing deeps holds this past week. He was using mud minnows for bait and he was fishing deep deep deep!

Captain Kevin Rose of Miss Judy Charters has been finding a few cold water reds! Believe me they have really living up to their name. Our captains have caught a few reds on some days and done not so good on others. The bottom line is you can see them, but they just won’t eat! Best case scenarios are sunny days with a low tide stage taking place mid day. I suggest entering the area as quietly as you can, because noise travels further in colder water. Best baits are mud minnows and last year’s old smelly dead shrimp.

Captain Tommy Williams of Miss Judy Charters is our sheepshead catching man! However, even his days have been hit and miss! Some days he is getting more hits with no hook ups. And the other days he is catching a few. With water temps in the mid forties one day and then back in the fifties the next or not, no wonder the fish are confused!

    Offshore Report
I have not been offshore this past week. The winds causing rough sea conditions have not allowed me to do so. However, if I went and made it too the artificial reefs I would be targeting sheepshead, black drum, flounder, trophy red fish, and black sea bass! Why? Because it is time!
