LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 16.5 FEET, 40’S, CLEAR

Bass fishing is fair. The float and fly, the jerk bait and spoons have been the best baits. Work the points with these lures and work them slowly. Other areas where the channel makes a sharp turn at or near a major point are good places to check out this week. We have another very cold weather front this week. Air temperatures are very cold and the fish will react to the weather by not feeding and relating the heavy structure with the very cold temperatures and high pressure. Any warm water you can find can have active bass. They still have to eat. Anglers can see the fish that are dead on the bottom and the Lowrance Down Scan beams can see them one inch off the bottom.

Line side fishing is fair. The cold weather has really dropped the water temperature on the north end. But it is still holding a ton of fish, mostly white bass and small hybrids. These fish have been picky, but they will still eat live bait and will take a spoon. Look for these fish north of Galts Ferry. Use the Lowrance Structure Scan and Down Scan technology to find the bait and the fish will be close by. Mid lake is where you want to be if you are looking for stripers. Bartow Carver to the dam is the place to be for stripers and bigger schools of hybrids. These fish are after big baits. Try jumbo threadfins and gizzard shad. If you don’t have shad, Trout will work. If you’re looking for a big fish, go by Striper Soup and pick up a couple dozen gizzards. We have also had some really good luck mid lake pulling umbrella rigs the last few times out. These fish have moved out of the river channel and up on the edge of it. Look for these fish to be in water 20 to 40 feet deep. We look for the live bait bite to really ramp up once the water temperature stabilizes. I think hitting the lake without live bait could be a big mistake. This time of the year, you need to be open minded on your techniques. Top water, trolling, spooning and live bait can all work this time of year, but what worked yesterday may not work tomorrow. Take the kitchen sink with you when heading out to the pond this time of year.
