  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE MUDDY TO HEAVILY STAIN. 50’S DOWN LAKE AND 60’S UP LAKE. WATCH FOR FLOATING DEBRIS LAKE WIDE.

The lake level remains fairly stable resting at .4 feet under full pool and around 59 degree surface temperature. The backs of the major creeks are still stained, and the main lake below Brown's Bridge is still clear. The waters above Brown's Bridge are more stained in the main river areas than the lower lake, and the further you go north, the heavier the stain

Many options to catch fish still exist and you can pretty much chose your approach, although one will work better than another on any given day. A Picasso Shake down head and worm combo is hard to beat right now for bites, as is a Ned rig. That Keitech on a jig head is still working very well when slow reeled on the bottom in the backs of pockets/ditches as well as out on the rock points and humps. The location and technique for the best bite does seem to vary each day, and sometimes dramatically so stay flexible in your approach. Try one type of area or technique, and if that is not working, move on. This is so important right now gang Stay on the move until you find some biters. The steeper stuff has held some fish too, and can be a good choice given the recent cold front. On the cooler days, make sure to look out at the very ends of these places in deeper water. Creeks and main lake are both producing, and as usual, focus more on the main lake or mouths of creeks for the bigger fish, and back in the creeks for numbers, but you are apt to catch a big fish anywhere right now. That's what makes this time of year so much fun! As usual for this time of year, the docks are also holding fish. Check those docks back in creeks or pockets that are in 15 feet of water and less. Look at the last 2 or 3 docks in any creek arm or pocket for those largemouth. Look for the fish to be under the docks when the sun is up, and more just around the docks in low light or clouds. A Picasso Shake Down head and worm combo or a Spro Jerk bait and a Vision 110 are good options around the docks. Spring is here, the bite is on, and I am filling up fast. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this spring. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates for spring: May: 2, 7, 16, 17, 22, 23, 30, and 31. Give me a call and come enjoy some outstanding Spring Fishing on Lake Lanier.

Striper fishing is fair. The fish are scattered, and we have been unable to establish a clear pattern. Every day seems like a new day and the fish can be anywhere on the lake. This past week the Stripers have been feeding at night under a very bright moon. Consequently, there was a “hold over” early bite in the back of the creeks. After an hour or so the fish move to the mouth of the creeks and the bite slows until mid to late afternoon. We believe the key factor is the weather. If we can get some consistent temperatures without cold fronts the fishing should significantly improve. The south end of the lake is more productive than the North end. The bite continues to favor the smaller medium Shiners but take both Herring and Shiners as the bite can and probably will change to the larger baits. Fish free lines and planner boards shallow with the bank side planner board set at 20 feet behind the board, free lines at 70 to 100 feet behind the boat and the deep water boards at 50 to 80 feet behind the boards. Use split shots on some of the lines to ensure depth coverage. We are using a 5 foot 15lb. test fluorocarbon leader on all of our lines. Keep your trolling motor speed between .6 and 1.0 miles per hour. Also, keep someone on the front deck casting a ½ ounce buck tail jig with a fluke. The water is clear on the main lake and stained in the back of the creeks. The lake level is at full pool.

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club.
    See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

Water Temperature is around 58 degrees and as expected, Crappie fishing has improved in the past week. We are in the middle of the spawn. Some fish remain staged in shallow docks at 10 foot depths or less, waiting to move in to the banks to spawn. Others have completed their spawn and are heading back to the docks. Some of the fish we are catching on the shallow docks appear to have already spawned, while some on same docks still have their eggs. Long line trolling works well this time of year since the fish are roaming back and forth to the shallows. However, pretty much everything is working. Whether using crappie minnows or a jig under a cork, cast your bait or jig through the weed lines and retrieve slowly. Some blow downs are starting to hold fish in pockets and backs of creeks. Shooting docks remains the best method of catching the bigger fish. You should be ten feet or so away from the dock, with a five to six foot medium action rod, and high visibility line not heavier than four pound test. Release a length of line about two thirds the length of your rod, and leave the bail in the open position while you are holding the line with one finger. Grab the curve of the hook (below the barb) and bring it toward your body. Keep the base of the rod parallel to the water while pulling the line toward you to sharply bow the tip of the rod. Release the jig and the line at the same time, while aiming toward your target. If you need practice before heading out, try raising your garage door a foot or more and try shooting into the void. Make sure you break the hook off the jig so it doesn’t harm pets or property. On the lake, target docks in ten feet of water or less that have some type structure below. Your side scan can be very helpful in locating structure. We’ve been catching fish on docks and brush piles near docks pretty much all day long. Blow downs and weed lines are doing better in the mornings and late in the day. Jiffy jigs or Bobby Garland soft body grubs with 1/24 ounce or 1/32 ounce jig heads remain our number one choice. For those who prefer live bait, a slip cork and a trusty crappie minnow should put a few fish in the boat. So, get out there and fish while fishing is good and before the lake gets busier with the warmer weather.
Stay safe on the water and wear your life jacket!
