  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS .09 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE MUDDY TO HEAVILY STAIN. 50’S DOWN LAKE AND 60’S UP LAKE. WATCH FOR FLOATING DEBRIS LAKE WIDE.

The lake level has shot up with all the rain we have received over the past few days. We are now sitting above full pool for the first time in a very long time! The backs of the major creeks are now muddy, but the main lake below Brown's Bridge is still clear. The waters above Brown's Bridge are more stained in the main river areas than the lower lake, and the further you go north, the heavier the stain, especially with all the recent rain. What is amazing is that we are still hovering around the 60 degree temperature mark here at the end of April! We have had so many cold fronts, and they have affected fishing greatly. Based on the long range forecast however, that is about to change! 70's/50's will be the order of the day every day starting Friday, which will make for some big changes upcoming. Many options to catch fish still exist and you can pretty much chose your approach, although one will work better than another on any given day. The fluke bite has been strong the past week for us. Also, a Picasso Shake down head and worm combo is still hard to beat right now for bites, as is a Ned rig. Secondary points, 45 degree banks, docks, as well as grass filled pockets are all holding fish right now, and the aforementioned array of lures will catch them, along with others things I'm sure. Creeks and main lake are both producing, and as usual, focus more on the main lake or mouths of creeks for the bigger fish, and back in the creeks for numbers, but you are apt to catch a big fish anywhere right now. As I mentioned above, the docks are holding fish, which is traditional for Lanier in April. Check those docks back in creeks or pockets that are in 15 feet of water and less. Look at the last 2 or 3 docks in any creek arm or pocket for those largemouth. Look for the fish to be under the docks when the sun is up, and more just around the docks in low light or clouds. A Picasso Shake Down head and worm combo, a Ned rig, or a fluke are all good choices around the docks. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this spring. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates May: 11, 23, 24, and 30. June: 4, 5, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29. Give me a call and come enjoy some outstanding Spring Fishing on Lake Lanier! And don't forget to schedule your top water trip for June.

Striper fishing is fair but the forecast is great! The month of May has been one of the wettest on record pushing the water level of the lake from 6 feet below full to almost 1 foot above full pool. The cold fronts and wild swings in temperatures has also contributed to the rough fishing this month. May is starting out with warm temperatures and sunny days. Look for the Stripers to start feeding aggressively on points and flats in the creeks and pockets on the main lake. Look for the shallow water bite to fire up with free lines and planner boards being the key technique. The baits of choice are currently Blueback Herring and Medium Shiners but keep a larger Gizzard Shad tied on for that big fish roaming the bank looking to pack on some weight. Fish free lines and planner boards shallow with the bank side planner board set at 20 feet behind the board, free lines at 70 to 100 feet behind the boat and the deep water boards at 50 to 80 feet behind the boards. Use split shots on some of the lines to ensure depth coverage. We are using a 5 foot 15lb. test fluorocarbon leader on our lines. Keep your trolling motor speed between .6 and 1.0 miles per hour. Also, keep someone on the front deck casting a 1/2 ounce buck tail jig with a fluke. The water is stained on the main lake with a heavy stain to muddy condition in the creeks. This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

The combination of high wind and rain has kept most of the fishermen, including the die hards off the lake the last several days. Today, I did not see water temps above 59 degrees. Normally for this time of year, water temps are around mid sixties or above. Lake level is about 6” above full pool, and the backs of the creeks are moderately to heavily stained. There is also a lot of floating debris on the water, so be careful. Currently, these conditions have made fishing fair at best. The up side is the projected temperatures in the area for the next week are more in line with those typical of this time of year, so we should see a rise in the water temperature and fishing should pick up significantly in the next few days. Currently we are still targeting docks, but with the rise in water temps, the fish should be moving to stand alone brush piles. So, as the weather warms up, get out on the water and try your luck!
