  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS .57 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED AND 71 DEGREES.

It appears that summer is upon us! 90's in the forecast means we will have the dreaded jump from early spring to Georgia summer. The waters above Brown's Bridge are slightly stained in the main river areas and creek arms toward the backs. The lower main lake is clear, and there is still some stain in the lower end creeks, but that is going away quickly with all the sunny days. The warm weather has really got things moving last week. There are many patterns working right now as you may expect. There are fish shallow back in pockets as well as fish starting to gather on the humps and points, and the brush is also holding fish as well in some areas. Fish are in all stages of the spawn as some of the main lake spots are starting to move up and others are finishing up. As I said before, there are many pattern options out there now. Lately, we have been fishing shallow, rock and sand and clay points and flats in the mornings with flukes, top water walking baits, Red Fins, spinnerbaits, swim baits, and crank baits. All have produced well at times, it just depends on the day as always. So rotate your bait selections to zero in on the best bite on any given day. Later in the day we have been moving out to the shallow brush on humps and points that are holding fish, particularly when the sun is up. On some days the deeper summer brush is also holding fish. Many of the spots in the creeks are spawning right now also in the shorter pockets off the main creek channels. A fluke, a trick worm, or a 4" worm on a shaky head or drop shot should do the trick on these fish. Look for sandy areas as well as clay and pea gravel banks. Of course, the docks are still in play also. A Picasso Shake Down head and worm, a Ned rig, or a fluke should get the job done on the docks in those main lake and creek pockets. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates June: 5 (AM), 6, 7, and 11 (pm), 12(PM), 13 (pm), 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29. Give me a call NOW and book your top water trip for June it should be awesome this year!

Striper fishing is fair. Despite the warmer water temperature this week the bite remains fair. The fish are moving and establishing a clear pattern continues to be frustrating. You can catch fish over open water, shallow points, and pockets and from one end of the lake to the other. The problem is they never seem to be in the same place from one day to the next. Your best bet is pulling baits over points. Try a run and gun approach by pulling free lines over a point and running to the next point. If you catch a fish spent a couple of minutes retracing your pull but do not be surprised if you only catch one fish on any given point. Also keep someone on the deck casting a top water or a buck tail jig. You can try the same run and gun approach using an umbrella rig. Your other option is to pull and area with free lines and planner boards. Fish free lines and planner boards shallow unweighted and weighted with a small split shot. Vary your distance from 50 to 120 feet back. The new Lowrance FishReveal software for the Gen 3, Elite Ti and CARBON machines makes spotting the fish on the DOWN SCAN super easy. The software is free on the Lowrance web site. The water is stained in the back of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake level is .6 feet above full pool. The current water temperature is in the low to mid 70’s this week. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 of contact us on our web site at www.bigfishonguide.com.

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s
Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

Water temperatures are in the low seventies, with high sixties early in the mornings farther north. Fishing conditions are good. The fish are pulling out to deeper docks with structure. Keep in mind that the lake level is about 6” above full pool, so homeowners have moved docks in, and brush piles that are typically located inside the docks are now on the outside edges of the docks. So it is an added bonus if you find a good sized brush pile outside the dock, especially if it is not in direct sunlight. In this case, stay thirty to forty feet away from the dock and cast your jig to the other side of the brush. Jig it slowly over the brush toward the boat. You may want to experiment and let it fall a little into the brush. This time of the year, four pound high visibility line is very critical. One twenty fourth ounce soft body Jigs and hair jigs are working well. Also, the bigger fish are moving onto stand alone brush piles in the backs of creeks. Those brush piles are in twenty to twenty five feet of water, topping out at ten to fifteen feet below the surface. As always, the more brush piles you hit and the more docks you fish, the better your chances of boating more fish. If a spot isn’t working, move on. Four to eight mid to large sized fish is about average per stop. So if your hits are yielding only smaller fish, move on to explore other docks or brush piles. Stay safe on the water, wear your life jacket!
