LAKE LANIER IS .57 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED AND 71 DEGREES.

This report brought to you by: Jimbo Mathley Jimbo on Lanier www.jimboonlanier.com

The lake is slightly stained in the main river areas and creek arms toward the backs. The lower main lake is clear, and there is still some stain in the lower end creeks in places. There continue to be many patterns working. We are still catching post as well as some pre-spawn fish, and there are fish just bedding now, particularly on the main lake. There are fish shallow back in pockets as well as fish starting to gather on the humps and points, and the brush is also holding fish in some areas as well. Lately, we have been fishing shallow, rock/sand/clay points and flats in the mornings with flukes, top water walking baits, Red Fins, spinnerbaits, swimbaits and crankbaits. All have produced well at times, it just depends on the day as always. So rotate your bait selections to zero in on the best bite on any given day. Later in the day we have been moving out to the shallow brush on humps and points that are holding fish, particularly when the sun is up. On some days the deeper summer brush is also holding fish and those fish are starting to come up for top water and swimbaits. We really have not been focusing on the spawning fish, but those can certainly be caught. I like a 4" worm on a drop shot or 1/8 ounce Shaky head when targeting these fish, which you normally find in pockets and around docks as well. A fluke is always a good search bait for these spawners, and they will almost always swing at it and give away their location, if not eat it. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates June: 6(PM), 7, 12(PM), 13 (pm), 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29. Striper fishing is good. Our striper bite has picked up this week. You can catch fish over the lake on points, in open water and pockets from one end of the lake to the other. We have been pulling points with Herring on two or three free lines while casting a 5/8 ounce buck tail jig. Try a run and gun approach by pulling free lines over a point and running to the next point. You will have to hit several points before finding one holding fish. Once you find a productive point you may have to leave it and come back in a couple of hours. The fish have a tendency to scatter when you catch one. If you want to cover more points faster instead of deploying free lines run and gun with a buck tail jig, a Chug Bug and a spinning rod to pitch Herring. We have also had some luck pulling the umbrella rigs shallow on points and on clay banks. Target a 20 to 25 foot bottom with your rigs at 50 to 70 feet back. Vary your speed to avoid the brush piles and trees. Don’t forget your down rods as the fish may move to deeper water as the day progresses. The lake level is 4 feet above full pool. The current water temperature is in the mid to high 70’s. To book your guide trip call us at 404-561-2564 of contact us on our web site at www.bigfishonguide.com.

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s
Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

Water temperature is in the high seventies, and a few degrees higher in the afternoon. The month of May remains strong for Crappie fishing on Lake Lanier. The secret to catching crappie this time of year is to use the method of “run and gun” (targeting as many docks with structure as possible). Using your downscan and side scan will greatly assist in finding these spots. There are a lot of fishermen on the lake, and it is getting busier with recreational boaters as well. We’ve been catching good numbers of quality fish on deeper docks, especially targeting the channel docks in fifteen to twenty five feet of water. When you start catching smaller fish, move on. The fish on submerged brush piles in fifteen to twenty feet of water are greater in number, but smaller in size. The brush piles with tops about 10 feet below the surface are producing best. Your electronics will help you determine whether there are fish on the brush piles or not. If there are, throw a marker buoy and fish the whole brush pile by circling your buoy to find the best angles. Stay off the brush about thirty feet, cast your jig past the brush pile and retrieve slowly while shaking your rod slightly. This will give the jig more action. You will get most of your bites ten feet below the surface either directly over or slightly to the side of the brush pile. Our preferred bait is still one twenty fourth ounce soft body jigs or hair jigs. If you prefer using a crappie minnow under a slip cork, it will work just as well. The fish are aggressive right now, so the color doesn’t seem to matter, but if the bite slows, switch colors. If your boat is set up for tight lining, get your trolling rods out and put them to good use. Crappie minnows under a Carolina rig is your best bet for tight lining. Locate the submerged brush piles and troll over and around the piles. The night fishing bite seems to be picking up slowly, as we are noticing new dangling ropes from the bridges. Once the nights are consistently warmer, the night bite will pick up even more. It’s a great time of year to enjoy fishing see you on the water. Stay safe and wear your life jacket!
