August Fishing in Kentucky

August fishing usually means the dog days of summer. But this year we have had a different twist. Continuous rains and mild temps have given us an opportunity to fish a little different. On some of the lakes we have a high water levels and I have been able to catch them shallow and deep. It really doesn’t matter if the lake is high or low. I have caught good fish on buzz baits in the middle of the day. And this has to do with a cooler summer and plenty of water flowing in and putting a lot of oxygen in the water for this time of year.

What I’m going to do is give you some of my patterns that have been working and hopefully you can use them to help you catch a few more fish.

In the creeks I have been using a crankbait to catch some of my better fish, It seems like you need stained to muddy water to catch them with the crankbait, I have been using a chartruse with a black back made by Thunder Shad, this bait has a wide wobble and it creates a lot of water disturbance. I have been fishing the bait on 15lb line and cranking it with a medium retrieve.

I also have been able to catch fish on a brush hog and a worm, I have been flipping it on the points at any cover I can find, now this is working with a high water situation. Also fish a buzz bait in this area as well early and late in the day.

Fishing docks is something I love to do this time of year. I will fish a spinnerbait around the docks fishing it fairly fast. And letting the bait fall at the end of the dock, this is where I usually will get the strike. Also a top water early or on a rainy day will also produce some strikes.
