  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS .57 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED AND 71 DEGREES.

The lake is back on the rise with the recent rain, and the surface temps are right around 79 degrees in the lower lake. The waters above Brown's Bridge remained slightly stained in the main river areas and creek arms toward the backs. The lower main lake is clear, and there is still some stain in the lower end creeks in places. We have been fishing shallow, rock/sand/clay points and flats in the early mornings with flukes, top water walking baits, Red Fins, spinnerbaits, swimbaits and crankbaits. All have produced well at times, it just depends on the day as always. So rotate your bait selections to zero in on the best bite on any given day. Later in the day we have been moving out to the shallow brush on humps and points that are holding fish, particularly when the sun is up. The deeper brush is starting to hold fish consistently as well and the Top water and swimbait bite is steadily improving. This has been working from about 9 am on into the day of late. This bite is becoming our focus for most of the day. We really have not been focusing on the spawning fish, but those can certainly be caught. We use a 4" worm on a drop shot or 1/8 ounce Shaky Head when targeting these fish, which you normally find in pockets and around docks as well. A fluke is always a good search bait for these spawners, and they will almost always swing at it and give away their location, if not eat it.

Striper fishing is good. The Striper bite has picked up this week. You can catch fish over the lake on points, in open water and pockets from one end of the lake to the other. We have been pulling points with Herring on two or three free lines while casting a 5/8 ounce buck tail jig. Try a run and gun approach by pulling free lines over a point and running to the next point. You will have to hit several points before finding one holding fish. Once you find a productive point you may have to leave it and come back in a couple of hours. The fish have a tendency to scatter when you catch one. If you want to cover more points faster instead of deploying free lines run and gun with a buck tail jig, a Chug Bug and a spinning rod to pitch Herring. We have also had some luck pulling the umbrella rigs shallow on points and on clay banks. Target a 20 to 25 foot bottom with your rigs at 50 to 70 feet back. Vary your speed to avoid the brush piles and trees. Don’t forget your down rods as the fish may move to deeper water as the day progresses. The lake level is 4 feet above full pool. The current water temperature is in the mid to high 70’s. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 of contact us on our web site at www.bigfishonguide.com.

The new Lowrance FishReveal software for the Gen 3, Elite Ti and CARBON machines makes spotting the fish on the DOWN SCAN super easy. The software is free on the Lowrance web site.

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s
Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

Water temperatures are in the low eighties, the lake level is a little over full pool and is expected to rise with the rain. The backs of creeks are moderately stained. For the avid crappie fishermen who don’t mind dodging the increasing traffic on the lake, crappie fishing remains good. The early morning bite is good to excellent, from thirty minutes before daylight to about 9:30, longer if cloudy. Target deeper docks with structure below the surface, especially if you can find a dock with a sizeable brush pile just outside it, which is an added bonus. The docks that are producing have twenty to thirty foot depths, and are closer to the main creek channels. With this condition, these fish have the best of both worlds – the cover of the brush pile, then the shade of the dock during the middle of the day. If you can find a dock with an active beaver, that is even better, as fresh vegetation is continuous. Look for limbs and branches sticking out of a dock. Also target submerged brush piles in at least twenty to thirty feet of water. Fish the brush pile from all angles. This time of year, the fish are holding tight on the brush. Before you leave a spot, ease up slowly on top of the brush pile and try vertical jigging. Soft body, hair jigs and minnows are all working well. Because the fish are deep, the sensitivity of the bite seems less, so watching your line is VERY important. If you see or sense any unusual movement, set the hook! For the night owls, bridge fishing is picking up. The sign of a good bridge is if you see dangling ropes from above. That typically means it is being fished by regular night fishermen. You will need a fishing light, and it can easily take an hour or two for the light to draw the bait and the bait to draw the crappie. So be patient, stay safe on the water, and wear your life jacket!
