  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS 3.1 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 71 DEGREES. BE CAREFUL AS HERE IS FLOATING DEBRIS WIDE FROM LOGS TO BLACK DOCK FLOATS.

Bass fishing is fair. The lower main lake is clear and there is a heavy stain in the lower end creeks in places. We have been fishing shallow on rocks and points. We have been fishing shallow, rock/sand/clay points and flats in the early mornings with flukes, top water walking baits, Red Fins, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, and crankbaits. Later in the day we have been moving out to the shallow brush on humps and points that are holding fish, particularly when the sun is up. The deeper brush is starting to hold fish consistently. We are using the top water and swimbaits from about 9 am on into the day of late. This bite is becoming our focus for most of the day. We are using the 4" worm on a drop shot or 1/8 ounce shaky head when targeting these fish, which you normally find in pockets and around docks as well. A fluke is always a good search bait for these spawners, and they will almost always swing at it and give away their location, if not eat it.

Striper fishing is good. The Striper bite continues to be strong despite the storms, rain and traffic. The water level continues to rise, and it looks like we will peak at over 3 feet above full pool. With the rise in the water level the lake pulls a lot of debris off the bank which requires caution when running down the lake. Keep your eyes on the water! The key has been points. Pitching Herring, casting top water and pulling Umbrella rigs will work however, your best bet is to run and gun points with free lined herring weighed and unweighted 50 to 80 feet behind the boat while casting a 5/8 ounce buck tail jig or your favorite top water bait. Pull your baits at 1 to 1.5 MPH and once you have covered the point go to the next point. Do not waste a lot of time making multiple passes on any given point. Once you find a productive point you may have to leave it and come back in a couple of hours. The fish have a tendency to scatter when you catch one. Long sloping points seem to be holding more fish than the deep water points. If you want to cover more points faster instead of deploying free lines run and gun with a buck tail jig, a Chug Bug, a Spook and a spinning rod to pitch Herring. We have also had some luck pulling the Umbrella rigs shallow on points. Target a 25 to 35 foot bottom with your rigs at 60 to 70 feet back. Vary your speed to avoid the brush piles and trees. Don’t forget your down rods as the fish may move to deeper water as the day progresses and the sun gets high around 10:00am. If it is cloudy you can catch fish on points all day. The lake level is rising daily. The current water temperature is in the high 70’s. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 of contact us on our web site at www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

There has been 5.5 inches of rain in two and a half days. Currently, the lake is a little more than 3 and a half feet above full pool and rising. If you trailer your boat, make sure to verify that your favorite ramp is still open, as some have been closed due to rising water. Water temperature is in the low to mid eighties. I would expect that the backs of creeks are heavily stained. Fishing is good to excellent. Your best bet for catching fish is early in the morning or late afternoon, on deep brush piles and especially on deep docks, where you will catch the bigger fish. The trolling bite has slowed down, but the night bite under a light is picking up. There is a lot of debris on the lake, including large logs, so be on the lookout for almost anything in your path. Stay safe on the water, and wear your life jacket!
