  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS 1.5 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 70’S DEGREES. BE CAREFUL AS HERE IS FLOATING DEBRIS WIDE FROM LOGS TO BLACK DOCK FLOATS.

The Corp of Engineers has been pulling water 24 hours a day for the last 10 days or so and the lake is now down almost 1.5 feet since last week's report. The waters above Brown's Bridge remained stained in the main river areas and creek arms toward the backs. The lower main lake is clear, and there is still some stain in the lower end creeks in places.

Bass fishing is good. The top water and swimbait bite is on! The baits of choice seem to vary each day, but we are now enjoying an all day top water and swimbait bite. Baits like a Sebile, fluke, chug bug, pencil popper, and a vixen have been working well each day. We are focusing on points and humps with brush in anywhere from 15 to 30 feet in both the main lake and creeks. That's the whole story. As many of you know who have followed me over the years, when this bite is on, that is what we do and that's all we do until we can't catch them anymore. I hope it lasts all summer. The high water does not seem to be affecting this bite. The fish do change positions on the structure each day, but this is normal on any day and with varying conditions. I like focusing on the open water bite as it seems to remain fairly consistent even in the face of multiple changing conditions. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates June: 26, 27, and 28(AM). July: 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 30, 31 Give me a call NOW and book your summer trip dates are going fast!

Striper fishing is fair. Fishing has slowed a little this week. We are covering a lot of water and picking up most of our fish on points. As the Lake continues to warm the stripers are transitioning from a spring to a summer pattern. Consequently, the stripers are slowly moving off the shallow water points and into the deeper water closer to the channels. There are still fish on points, but the numbers have decreased, and we must cover more points and expand our water depth coverage from 15 feet to 40 feet. We are using free lines both weighted and unweighted early and adding down rods over deeper water after the first 2 hours of daylight. The umbrella rigs are working and is a great technique for fishing points. Target a 30 to 40 foot bottom with your rigs at 60 to 70 feet back. Vary your speed to avoid the brush piles and trees. Do not waste a lot of time making multiple passes on any given point. We are not finding large schools on points. Look for the fish to move deeper off the points, into pockets and drainage ditches from creek channels this week. Also, down rod Herring will replace free lines as the primary technique. The key for this week is to stay flexible as the fish transition to their summertime pattern. There are Fish Lake wide but look for the South end to improve as the lake continues to warm. The lake level is 1.6 feet above full pool. The current water temperature is in the low 80’s. To book your guide trip call 404 561 2564 of contact us on our web site at www.bigfishonguide.com

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

The lake level is about a foot and a half above full pool, and gradually dropping. Water temps are fluctuating from 78 degrees to 82 degrees, depending on location and time of day. The cooler water from the mountains via the Chestatee and Chattahoochee rivers are keeping our overall water temps a little lower for this time of year. Thanks to that fact, the fishing reports that I received from early morning anglers were good to excellent. I fished Tuesday and had a great morning. The pattern remains the same as last week fish are holding tight to docks in deep water with some type structure in or around the docks, especially in river or creek channel docks. The pattern is simple: crappie have gone deep, seeking the cooler waters. We highly recommend 4 pound high visibility line, or even better, 2 pound high visibility line, which is what I am using. This assists in seeing any line movement, indicating a bite. Hair jigs, Jiffy jigs and soft body jigs are working equally well. If you don’t have the patience to wait for your jig to reach the strike zone near the bottom, use 1/16 ounce jig heads, which will fall faster. I’m still using the 1/24 ounce jig head, but it does require added patience and a steady hand to not move the jig while sinking. You’ve got to give it a chance to fall naturally. I suspect that live bait will work just as well. Overcast days will help extend the bite in the morning for an extra hour or so longer than on a sunny day. The fish that we are catching are pretty decent in size. As expected, the night bite continues to be good for this time of year. My advice is to not store your boat yet take advantage of this extended season and enjoy fishing! Stay safe wear your life jacket, and watch out for all the crazy boaters and jet skiers!
