  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS 1.2 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 70’S DEGREES.

Bass fishing is good. The top water and swimbait bite is HOT. The baits of choice seem to vary each day, but we are now enjoying an all day top water and swimbait bite. Baits like a Sebile, fluke, Chug Bug, Pencil Popper and a Vixen are on my deck all day. We are focusing on points and humps with brush in anywhere from 15 to 30 feet in both the main lake and creeks. That's the whole story. As many of you know who have followed me over the years, when this bite is on, that is what we do and that's all we do until we can't catch them anymore. The high water does not seem to be affecting this bite. The fish do change positions on the structure each day, but this is normal on any day and with varying conditions. I like focusing on the open water bite as it seems to remain fairly consistent even in the face of multiple changing conditions. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer.

Striper fishing is good. The lake water temperature is in the mid 80’s and the stripers are transitioning from a spring to a summer pattern. Consequently, the stripers are slowly moving off the shallow water points and into pockets and drainage ditches off the creek and river channels. There are still fish on points and you can catch them pulling weighted free lines during the first couple of hours of daylight. Once the sun gets up during mid morning the fish are moving into pockets over a 40 to 60 foot bottom. Use your Lowrance HDS to search for these suspended fish. Use down rods as your primary technique. We are using 5 foot of 15 lb. test fluorocarbon leader. The Umbrella rigs are working early on points. Target a 30 to 40 foot bottom with your rigs at 60 to 70 feet back. Vary your speed to avoid the brush piles and trees. Do not waste a lot of time making multiple passes on any given point. We are not finding large schools on points. You can also use the Umbrella rig as a search tool. It is not unusual to pick up a fish that you did not see on your graph. You can also use the Umbrella rig to trigger a bite when they will not eat. Look for the fish to continue to move off the points as then complete their transition to a summer time pattern. The key for this week is to stay flexible as the fish transition to their summertime pattern. There are fish lake wide but look for the fish to migrate to the southern half of the lake over the next couple of weeks. The lake level is 1.5 feet above full pool. The current water temperature is in the mid 80’s. To book your guide trip call 404 561 2564 of contact us on our web site at www.bigfishonguide.com
