  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS 1.1 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 80’S DEGREES.

The lake has remained fairly stable since my last report and now sits at 1.1 foot above full pool. The surface temps have climbed to around 85 degrees in the mornings. The lower lake is clear in most areas, although some areas are starting to see evidence of an algae bloom. The top water and swimbait bite has softened over the last week. We knew this was coming, but hoped it would hold off a bit longer. We will still have some good days on top water through the summer, but they will be fewer and farther between. The bait is moving and the fish are changing with them. We are starting to incorporate a drop shot more in my approach as well as a Spybait also. We are starting to look out deeper on those humps and points now, even outside of the brush area and more toward the timber edges off the deep side of some of those places 25 to 35 feet is a good depth on which to focus. I am also starting to run some live bait trips. We have been able to find the spot tails sometimes and we are also having success with the large minnows from Hammonds. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates in July: 12(PM), 18, 31. I'm also booking for August. This is a great time to take the kids on a Spot tail trip. Give me a call NOW and book your summer trip dates are going fast!

Striper fishing is good. The lake is stratified and the thermocline is at 25 to 27 feet. Summer lake stratification is the process of a lake separating into three layers: a top warm layer, a transition layer and a deep cold water layer. The transition layer is referred to as the thermocline. Because the Striped Bass is temperature sensitive he will spend his summer in the deep cold water on the southern half of the lake and seldom venture above the thermocline. Consequently, fishing above the thermocline, currently 25 to 27 feet, for Stripers is not productive. The Stripers are in pockets and drainage ditches off the creek and river channels. Use your Lowrance HDS to search for these suspended fish from 30 to 60 feet deep over a 50 to 100 foot bottom. Down rods with Blueback Herring has taken over as your primary technique for catching these deep water fish. If you want to fish while you are searching, both umbrella rigs and lead core trolling is working. Set the umbrella rigs 120 to 140 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 MPH. Set the Lead core line at 7 to 8 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. The key is to fish at or below the thermocline. All of the creeks south of Browns Bridge are holding fish. Also, look for some fish to migrate to the creek channels this week. The water temperature is in mid 80’s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 1.1 feet above full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com
