  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS 1.1 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 80’S DEGREES.

The lake has remained fairly stable since my last report and now sits at 1.0 foot above full pool. The surface temps have stayed around 85 degrees. The lower lake is mainly clear, the and the upper lake remains stained and the rivers are muddy. We experienced a little resurgence in the top water bite this week, which was nice to see. We have found some good schooling activity in the mornings this week around main lake points. The humps seemed to be stronger last week, but the points seem to be better this week. The drop shot bite has also been good this past week humps and points in the 30 foot range have been the best for us on the drop shot. We are also starting to run some live bait trips we have been able to find the spot tails at times, and we are also having success with the large minnows from Hammonds as well. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates July: 31. I'm also booking for August. This is a great time to take the kids on a Spot tail trip! Give me a call NOW and book your summer trip dates are going fast!

Striper fishing is good. Not much has changed this week. We have had a number of questions on summer lake stratification this week and we thought it warranted a little more explanation. The lake is stratified and the thermocline is at 25 to 27 feet. Summer lake stratification is the process of a lake separating into three layers: a top warm layer (currently at 86 degrees), a transition layer (approximately 2 foot in depth) and a deep cold water layer currently in the mid 50 degrees). The transition layer is referred to as the thermocline. Striped bass is temperature sensitive and cannot survive in 80 degree water getting your baits down below the thermocline is critical. You should ensure you are fishing your blueback herring at 30 to 80 feet deep. A lot of you have line counter reels which are a great tools. However, they will be off depending on how full you spool your line. To calibrate your line counter zero your reel at surface level and drop it down to 30 feet. Use you electronics to verify the actual depth. Repeat this calibration at 50 and 80 feet. You now have a good feel for your line counter accuracy. This may sound trivial but the difference of 4 or 5 feet can be the difference between getting bit and not getting bit. There are fish in pockets on the main lake and creek mouths but look for fish to start showing up over the river and creek channels. More fish have been showing up over the river and creek channels. If you want to fish while you are searching, both Umbrella rigs and Lead core trolling is working. Set the Umbrella rigs 120 to 140 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 MPH. Set the Lead core line at 8 to 9 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. The water temperature is in mid 80’s the water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 1.0 feet above full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com
