  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS .91 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 80’S DEGREES.

Bass fishing is good. The drop shot is hot. There is a good top water bite still in the mornings on the main lake points. Aside from the morning schooling bite, the afternoon has been best for the top water bite. Points and humps over brush in 25 feet of water or so. A Chug Bug and smaller walking baits seem to get it done best. The drop shot bite has also been good this past week. Humps and points in the 30 foot range have been the best for us on the drop shot. The Spybait bite has been on and off for us, but some days it is the thing to be using. If you see the fish suspended up in the water column but not hitting the top water, the Spybait should be the ticket. I am also starting to run some live bait trips. We have been able to find the spot tails at times, and we are also having success with the large minnows from Hammonds as well. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer. Please call me for open dates. 770 542 7764 This is a great time to take the kids on a Spot tail trip or learn to fish deep water summer patterns. Give me a call NOW and book your summer trip dates are going fast!

Striper fishing is good. The lively bait bite has improved this week. Notice I said, “Lively bait”. Fresh lively Herring is key to catching summertime Stripers. Start your day with 5 dozen Herring and change your bait every 5 to 8 minutes on a rotating basis. Get your baits down below the thermocline as quickly as possible. One way is to set your rod in the rod holder and let the line out to the desired depth with the empty hook tagged to the rod. Bait your hook, drop the herring in the water and it will fall very quickly to the desired depth. Never “check” a bait and then drop it back down. If it is time to check the bait it is time to change it. The act of bringing the herring up through warm water is enough to stress it out and degrade its performance. We are still finding some fish in the trees just off the creek and river channels. You may want to start your search off the channels and over trees. If you mark a fish, drop your baits down to just above the trees. If the fish are there you can see them come out to the trees and check out your bait. We are using a 5 foot 12 pound test Seaguar fluorocarbon leader and 1/0 Gamakatsu octopus hooks. Do not hesitate to tie a couple of rods with different leaders to optimize both the length and size of your leader. Some anglers are using leaders up to 12 feet in length. If you want to fish while you are searching, both umbrella rigs and lead core trolling is a good option. Set the umbrella rigs 120 to 140 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 MPH. Set the Lead core line at 8 to 9 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. The water temperature is in mid to high 80’s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is 1.0 foot above full pool. To book your guide trip call us at 404 561 2564 or contact us on our web site. www.bigfishonguide.com
