  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS .90 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 80’S DEGREES.

The lake has is down more than half a foot from all the rain we received last week. The Corp of Engineers continues to pull water regularly on the weekdays in 12 hour shifts or more. The lower lake is still mainly clear with a slight stain back in the creeks. I have not been above Brown's Bridge this week, but I can only assume some muddy water up the rivers and a good stain between the rivers and Brown's Bridge. The water in parts of the lower lake is also showing a green hue indicating the presence of an algae bloom. The bite this week has again been pretty tough. We are averaging about 5 8 bites a day on artificials, and I have not run a live bait trip in several weeks. Best overall for us this week has been the drop shot. We have been using the drop shot rigs with worms as well as other Roboworm selections in the 30 feet range on humps and points for the best results. LJ's Passion has been a good color for us as have some variations of Morning Dawn in the Robo. If you see the fish suspended up in the water column, try a top water. Believe it or not we are getting a few top water bites every day. We have even had some doubles! A small popper and a spook Jr have been good for the top water bite. The spy bait has come back in play some this week as well. Throw it out and count it down to 10 or so and begin a steady, slow retrieve back to the boat. Light line and a light drag are a must. Please get with me soon if you would like a trip this summer. Following is a list of my upcoming open dates August: 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 this is a great time to take the kids on a Spot tail trip or learn to fish deep water summer patterns. It's also a great time to have me on your boat for an electronics tune up and review! Give me a call and let's fish!

Striper fishing is fair. Not a lot has changed this week. Striper fishing continues to be hit or miss. Every day is a new day! The Stripers continue to move and where they were yesterday may not have anything to do with they are today. If you do find a school it is not unusual to have them move before you can turn the boat around and deploy bait. Your best bet continues to be fingers and ditches which lead to the bays off the river and creek channels from Vans Tavern to the Dam. Use Your Lowrance HDS to search a pattern from the creek channel to the back of the ditch running into the bay. If you mark two or three fish stop and deploy down rods with Herring. You can catch Stripers on medium shiners but for us the Herring has outperformed medium shiners. We are also using 12 lb. test 7 to 8 foot leaders. Some anglers are using 14 feet of 10 pound test for their leaders. You may want to try both combinations. If you are using 14 foot leaders, check them often for knots as a herring can tie a knot in a leader in a heartbeat. The most critical factor is the condition of your herring. Get a couple of extra dozen baits and change them often. Ice your bait with non-chlorinated water every morning and if you have oxygen, now is the time to use it. Never pull a herring up to check it; pulling it up into the hot water and redeploying it is stressful and weakens the herring. If it is time to check a bait it is time to change it. High quality lively bait is the most important factor in Striper fishing. Check the channels for suspended fish at 30 to 50 feet and if you find them deploy your umbrella rigs or lead core line. Set the Umbrella rigs 120 to 140 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 MPH. Set the Lead core line at 8 to 9 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. The water temperature is in mid 80’s. The water is stained in the backs of the creeks and lightly stained on the main lake. The lake is 1.1 foot above full pool.
