LAKE LANIER IS FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 80’S

This report brought to you by: Jimbo Mathley Jimbo on Lanier www.jimboonlanier.com 770 542 7764

The Corp has continued to pull water, but mainly in the evenings of late, as opposed to through the day. The lake is now down from full pool for the first time in a long time. The lower lake is still mainly clear with a slight stain back in the creeks. Above Brown’s Bridge the water is slightly stained in the creeks, but fairly clear in the main river channel up to the Gainesville Bridge. Above the Gainesville Bridge there is even more stain both in the main river as well as the creeks. While the bite is still tough, it is definitely improving. We have found good results, in short bursts, on several different tactics. The top water and swimbait bite has is back on some days, which is refreshing to see. When it is there, it’s pretty good. Humps with brush have been the best option for that approach. Walking baits, Whopper Plopper, and a Sebile have been our best options. A SuperSpin with a Keitech trailer has still been productive as well on main river points as well as creek points. Also, very shallow on steeper creek banks has proven productive with the SuperSpin this past week. We have been fishing lay downs on steeper rock areas for some good fish on a weightless fluke rig. A jig has been good on these laydowns as well. Not a ton of bites, but certainly some good ones when you do get bit. When you see them hanging out on your graph in any depth, search around that area and fish it hard. If there is bait around, there is a bite to be had, but plan on working for it! I am seeing lots of bait starting to move back into the mouths of the creeks recently, and a lot of schooling going on both in the main channel as well as in the mouths of the creeks. These fish are tough to catch however as they don't stay up long. A SuperSpin has produced better for us than any other option on those schoolers Good luck to everyone fishing the BFL this weekend, hopefully the weather will hold for the event. The bite is starting to improve and should just continue to get better through the fall. For September I have: 17, 18, and 19 (PM), 20, 21, 24, 26, 27, 28, and 29. Now is the time to book your fall trip! Lots of great fishing ahead of us in the coming weeks! Give me a call and let’s fish!

Striper fishing is good. Striper fishing is the best it has been all summer. Fish are showing up suspended in the 30 to 40 foot range over the creek and river channels. This is primarily due to the lack of dissolved oxygen at the greater depths. You can still catch fish larger fish in the 60 to 80 foot range but it will require changing your bait often to ensure lively bait. Also, check deep water points in the mouth of the creeks at 60 to 80 feet and the mouth of “ditches” where they branch off the river and creek channels at 100 to 120 foot bottoms. We are setting down rods at 30 to 40 feet and 60 to 80 feet if we are marking deep fish. Pick up some medium shiners with your Herring in the morning and use them if you are getting short strikes on Herring. The majority of the short strikes have been the smaller Stripers at 30 to 40 feet level. There are a lot of boats fishing the Dam area, Baldridge, Shoal and Young Deer. If you do not want to fish with the crowds try Big Creek, Flowery Branch and the body of water connecting Two, Four and Six Mile creeks. We have also had some reports of fish starting to show up on the North end of the Lake. Umbrella rigs and Lead Core line with one ounce buck tail jigs are working. Set the Umbrella rigs 130 to 160 feet back and troll at a speed of 2.8 to 3.4 MPH. Set the Lead core line at 8 to 9 colors and a speed of 2.8 to 3.5 MPH. The water temperature is in low 80’s. The water is lightly stained in the backs of the creeks and clear on the main lake. The lake is .31 feet below full pool.
