The spoon bite is still the best action on the lake. Look in the 35 to 55 foot range for the spoon fish, but that can change any day in terms of the depth they are holding based on the bait. Look for the fish to be tighter to the timber on sunny days, and roaming more in those deep ditches on cloudy days. We have also still been working shallower rocky points with a jig and worm in the mornings and sometimes throughout the day. These slower presentations are becoming good options out in the ditches as well. We are catching some worm and jig fish in the 20 to 30 foot range, but I will say the presence of rock seems to be a key. The creek ditches are holding some fish now in shallower water and we have been catching some on the SuperSpin down in the ditches on some days, so count that bite has officially started. Also, with the cooling water temperatures, look for the jerk bait bite to pick up soon back in pockets.

Striper fishing is good. The bait and the fish are moving into the creeks and will continue over the next month. This is the time of year when you need to keep your eyes on the water looking for working birds. If you can see fish busting the surface quietly move in and cast a 1/2 ounce buck tail jig with a small fluke trailer. Also keep a rod with just a hook tied for casting a bait to the feeding fish. If the birds are circling an area, put out a spread of free lines, boards and a couple of down rods and fish the area. Find the Sea Gulls working with the Loons because there will be bait for foraging stripers too. Herring are working and the key is to fish the large concentrations of bait. Use the free lines, planner boards and as always, hang a couple of down rods over the side. Don't spend a lot of time in any one area. Check out Flowery Branch Creek, Four Mile Creek, Shoal Creek and Flat Creek. Up lake, head to the upper rivers and use the Lowrance Structure Scan technology to find bait and fish. Don't forget to weight some of your free lines and vary the distance behind the boat to cover a range of water depth.

This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www. laniercrappieanglers.net

Water temperatures are around 52 degrees, which is ideal for Crappie fishing. The bite is definitely on! The secret is to cover as much area as you can. Fish are either on the structure or not. If they are not there within the first few minutes, don’t waste time there keep moving until you find a concentration of bait, and start looking for structure. Crappie relate to structure, and you can catch them at 30 foot depths or shallower right now, concentrating on submerged brush piles, especially those close to docks. If you start catching small striped bass (5” to 6” lengths), my advice is to leave the area, as they will make the spot a waste of time. In addition, we should give them a chance to survive. A helpful tip this time of year: you will notice your line tend to coil up. Change it as often as you can, as it will save you from having to untangle it on the water. I don’t have the authority on live bait fishing, but the people that do, are reporting good catches, especially when tight-lining around brush piles. So dress in layers, load up your gear and get out and fish. Stay safe on the water and wear your life jacket,
