LAKE LANIER IS DOWN .67 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE STAINED. 50’S

The lake now stands at .7 feet below full pool. The main lake is fairly clear, and the creeks are stained and have become more so in some areas. There are also signs of the final turnover beginning to occur on the lake. The spoon bite has remained good this past week on most days. Look in the 35 to 55 foot range for the spoon fish, but that can change any day in terms of the depth they are holding based on the bait. Look for the fish to be tighter to the timber on sunny days, and roaming more in those deep ditches on cloudy days. We have also still been working shallower rocky points with a jig and worm in the mornings and sometimes throughout the day. These slower presentations are becoming good options out in the ditches as well, and sometimes in the backs of those ditches. We are catching some worm and jig fish in the 20 to 30 foot range, but I will say the presence of rock seems to be a key. This week the fish have been on the shallow secondary rock points adjacent to those ditches. The creek ditches are holding some fish now in shallower water and we have been catching some on the SuperSpin down in the ditches on some days. Also, with the cooling water temperatures, look for the jerk bait bite to pick up soon back in pockets. This is the time to learn those winter patterns ditch fishing, timber fishing, spoon fishing, it’s a great time to learn them all. I hope you will make plans to come join me. This is a great time to learn the deep timber bite with a spoon, worm, and jig, as well as the SuperSpin fishing in the ditches. I still have Dec 31 open this year. After that, I have Jan 2 and 3rd open. Give me a call and let’s fish.

Yesterday and today we saw a variety of water temperatures. Around Clark’s Bridge the water was heavily stained and around 44 degrees, with lower temps further north. Normal for this time of year, the water coming from the mountain creeks is cold, and with the rains, is also muddy. I suspect that the Chestatee side of the lake has similar conditions in Thompson Creek and further north. Water began clearing and temps rose south of Laurel Park, and the bite drastically picked up. So, helpful tip for this time of the year: finding warmer water temps will work to your advantage. Yesterday and today, fishing was good to excellent. We targeted river channel docks as well as creek channel docks where the water had moderate stain. Bobby Garland was my “go to” bait in a variety of colors. Darker colors such as “Twilight, Purple Passion Black Night” and similar colors worked well in moderately stained water. In the clearer water, we used lighter colored jigs such as “Monkey Milk, Key lime, Electric Chicken” and other similar colors. All worked well with a combination of 1/16 and 1/24 ounce jig heads. The fish are holding deeper. We targeted docks in deeper water, at 30 foot plus depths. When we fished docks showing larger schools of fish, they shallowed up as the bite continued. It is critical this time of year to find the right depth the fish are suspended. They are beginning to be less aggressive as their metabolism slows, so you can easily miss the bite by placing your bait above or below their position. Another tip: if you locate a deeper school of fish on your downscan and are having difficulty getting them to bite, vertical jigging is an excellent trick. Place the jig below them and bring up slowly, directly through the school. Hope you all have a wonderful time with family and friends over the holidays. Our next report will be in January, so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Stay safe on the water and wear your life jacket!
