First and foremost, if you can catch or purchase live shrimp I always suggest doing so. In the purchasing department some of bait houses are catching a few shrimp. Bandy’s, bull river, and Hogan’s do have them from time to time. However, it is not dependable. If you have a deep dropping net I suggest pulling over a deep hole and giving this a try. It is this time of the year! Another good live bait is mud minnows and finger mullet! (Fresh dead or alive) Never rule out using artificial bait, because it does work. Shrimp patterns work great at this time of the year. How do you fish them? Just like you do the real deal! Think about it!

While inshore fishing with Captain Kevin rose of Miss Judy charters Ashley Benton of savannah Georgia had one heck of a light tackle catching day!

Captain Kevin Rose of Miss Judy Charters is holding up a nice soon to be released back to the wild red fish! Captain Kevin is now participating in tagging red fish for the Georgia DNR and the Savannah sport fishing club! It sounds like to me that there is going to be a whole lot of red fish studying going on!

While inshore fishing with Captain Kevin rose of Miss Judy charters Ashley Benton of savannah Georgia caught this beautiful wintering spotted sea trout! I just love their coloring especially this time of the year!

While inshore fishing with Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charter Light blue jacket Jason Hogg, Harrison Hogg, age 13, Langston Hogg age 11 (orange shirt all from Kennesaw, Georgia) and Chris Isbill (Alabama hoodie) Richmond Hill, Georgia had a great catching day! Yes, the water temps are cold, yes there isn’t much live bait to be had, but they still wanted to go. And since Captain Garrett has been fishing everyday he basically had the fish bite dialed in on this cold water day! I asked Captain Garrett about the bait used and he said, “Well, it was a little dead shrimp and little live shrimp!” And you know I had to ask, “Where the heck did you get the live shrimp?” and he replied, “Deep hole dropping!”

Now before you run and get out the deep dropping nets and head over to your favorite deep hole spot, Captain Garrett reported he only caught a few live shrimp. And he used some leftover dead old smelly frozen shrimp! From the looks of the fish lined up on the cleaning table a few live shrimp and some smelly 2018 leftover shrimp was darn enough to make it a wonderful catching day! And once again if you don’t go you certainly will not know!

Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy charters is keeping up with the fish! Check out this just caught soon to be released red fish! I asked Captain Matt to give me a report, which he did and I am sharing with you!

Please meet the award winning Leibeck fishing team!
from left to right: Steve Leibeck, his wife Amy, his daughter Riley, all from Churchville, New York Captain Kathy Brown and Alli DeYoung! What kind of fish are on the table? Ring tail perch referred to on the Miss Judy Too as a McDonald’s Sandwich, sheepshead, black sea bass, and black drum!

It would not be proper if I didn’t write a little about this grand family fishing trip! Firstly the Leibeck’s are a very interesting family. Amy is a big animal veterinary and her husband Steve is a farrier. What is a farrier? Someone that specializes in putting shoes on horses. I had to ask, “How many times have you been kicked by a horse?” He said, “He just flat stopped counting many years ago!” Why? Because there have been so many times!

And if you think about it while working on the kicking end of a horse ..well...you need to be prepared! Being a big animal vet is no walk in the park especially when you are great at what you do and care! While talking to Amy I knew she was both of those wonderful things! Their daughter Riley-Jane just got her driver license, which means a traveling she can go! They called her Riley, but occasionally Riley-Jane. It stuck with me, because it is a perfect name! Just spending time with her, I know Riley will always work very hard to accomplish her goals. And when it comes to Riley-Jane, the sky is the limit!

So it was decided to do a little family fishing while on vacation in Savannah. And I am so glad they picked our company, because we all really did have a great day. And it went something like this! We anchored and then we fished with purple back fiddlers, black back fiddlers, and small pieces of thinly cut squid. As the catching began I starting making notes of exactly what we were catching and here’s the interesting list: We caught sheepshead, black drum, remora, pig fish, black sea bass, ocean perch, pinfish, and red fish. While doing all of this different catching we were chewing on America’s original dubble bubble gum and sucking on old time atomic fireballs.

If you have ever been on my boat, you already know I am not making this stuff up. I probably give away about a 1,000 each of bubble gums and fire balls from my boat each year! It is a Captain Judy tradition!

Amy Leibeck Churchville, New York holding a just caught sheepshead! I believe this is the one that went into the stew!

The Leibeck’s sent me a picture of their custom sheepshead stew! Magazine quality picture and stew fit for a king! Chef Amy whipped this stew up! Now as you know I don’t eat much fish, go figure, but I might have tried this for sure!

Riley Leibeck Churchville, New York did not have any trouble catching the hard to hook up sheepshead! Alli DeYoung is assisting!

Alli DeYoung is holding a small remora sometimes referred to as a pilot shark. They use their suction cup, located on the top of their head to attach themselves to sharks, turtles, ray, ocean sunfish, any large fish will do, and in this case a sheepshead. The reasoning behind the attachment is not for traveling but for eating. Anything that the host chews on or shreds into parts that don’t make it down the gullet gets washed out and the remora is right there to **** it in! A win win!

This juvenile remora located itself by the gills on the sheepshead enabling itself to **** in all the leftover crab parts. You see, a sheepshead is known for hitting a fiddle crab while on your hook so fast that it ***** the insides out leaving you with an empty crab shell still hanging on your hook. I am always telling our customers to check their fiddler crabs to make sure they are not fishing with an empty shell. Now, when the sheepshead gets a hold of the whole fiddle crab it crushes allowing the hard parts to pass out through it gills letting the meat parts go down the hatch. This is just about when the remora gets to eat! Why? Because some of the fiddler’s meat always gets pulled out through the gills!

Captain Kathy brown Amy Leibeck aka chef of some excellent fish stew are holding a nice pair of sheepshead!

Captain Kathy Brown is holding a nice black drum that she caught with a purple back fiddler. Alli DeYoung approves! I got to tell you this..when you see this picture if you don’t think fishing is a blessing....well, I am a loss for words! The smiles show and tell it all!

Amy Leibeck Churchville, New York is holding up a double hooked up black sea bass stringer and also showing us her half gone Atomic Fireball!

    The veil says it all!

Erin Bodnar and her husband Casey Maday were married by Captain Kevin Rose aboard the Miss Judy too on January 6 2017! We all had a fun catching time! I just love Erin’s veil. It was the perfect touch! All of these fish were cleaned and served at the couple’s reception!

    No veil needed!

And then it happened, Casey Maday Jacksonville, Florida called and booked a pre-anniversary fish day with he and his wife Erin! They are celebrating their second year of fishing magical bliss! Congratulations and we hope to see you both again soon!
The fish day was a complete success with Erin, Casey, Captain Deidra Jeffcoat, and I captain Judy aboard Miss Judy Too! It was a beautiful calm day and while using purple back fiddlers and small pieces of cut squid for bait. We caught keeper black fish, released an assorted sizes of juvenile to almost legal black sea bass, reef runners, pin fish, pig fish, sheepshead, rock bass, and sand perch! We kept a few, released the rest, and had a great light tackle reeling kind of an ocean trip!
Thanks as always for reading! Captain Judy
