  • Millwood Lake Fishing Report - AR

As of Monday, 11 February, Millwood Lake pool jumped slightly over the weekend with rain in sw Arkansas and se Oklahoma to approx 12" above normal pool with current discharge at the Millwood Dam approx 10,000 CFS. USACE made gate changes at the dam on Monday and are releasing around 10,018 CFS on Monday. Millwood lake is above normal conservation pool on Monday at 260.2 ft-msl. The tailwater below the dam, dropped slightly, but now rising, and as of Monday is now approx 232 ft-msl, with USACE gates release at the dam. Water temps also jumped over the past week. Be sure and check the most recent lake level of Millwood Lake on our website helpful links page, or at the US Army Corps of Engineers website for updated gate release changes and inflow rates with rising and falling lake levels and conditions. Watch for sudden gate changes and debris, which will increase with current in Little River. Navigation is normal, and floating debris is reduced in navigation this week.

***Be Advised, there are at least 2 BROKEN, MISSING, or DAMAGED BOAT LANE MARKERS ON THE NORTH END OF "LITTLE GAS LINE TO HIGHLINE BOAT LANE" FROM RECENT FLOOD DAMAGE. USE EXTREME CAUTION IN THE UPPER END OF THE BOAT LANE FROM THE HIGH LINE TO THE LITTLE GAS LINE CUTOFF AND WATCH FOR MISSING OR DAMAGED TELEPHONE POLE LANE MARKERS and THERE ARE MULTIPLE MISSING RIVER BUOYS ALONG LITTLE RIVER FROM YARBOROUGH POINT TO PARALOMA TRAIL!!*** USE EXTREME CAUTION IN NAVIGATION ALONG LITTLE RIVER UNTIL USACE HAS HAD TIME TO REPLACE THE MISSING BUOYS AND POLE MARKERS!!

NO-WAKE ZONES are in effect at White Cliffs Campground on Little River, and marked with No-Wake buoys.

Surface temps as of Monday, are ranging near 47ºF early to 53ºF range later under full sun, depending on location. Continue to use caution in navigation on Little River and Millwood this week, watching for random, broken, or floating timber with the current conditions of river flow in Little River. Navigation is normal conditions with the current discharge.

Clarity and visibility conditions worsened over the past few days with increase of current along Little River and navigation is considered cautious along Little River with the current discharge around 10,000CFS. Some debris remains present in Little River current, use caution. Further up river finds highest turbidity rates. As of Monday on main lake structure away from current, clarity & visibility is moderate stain, ranging approx 5-6 inches. Little River's visibility ranges 3-4 inches with stained conditions, depending on location and current. The oxbow's clarity currently ranging approx 10-15 inches depth of visibility depending on location. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, rain, or thunderstorms.

The Details: (see attached photo from last week)

Largemouth Bass: Millwood Lake elevation level was almost near normal conservation pool late last week, and jumped over the weekend with rainfall in sw Arkansas. Back on the rise as of Monday, clarity and visibility conditions worsened along Little River and oxbows. The bite for bass improved over the past few days for Largemouths, and is better during the mid day hours in the oxbows. Good reactions are getting bit with Bomber crankbaits, large bulky Hogs, Beavers, and 6" lizards are getting good responses. The best locations over the past few weeks have been in the back of the oxbows where water conditions and clarity are best, like back of McGuire and Horseshoe oxbows. Best bite certainly best during warmest periods of the day, from 8 to 15 feet deep drops, with stumps and remaining vegetation being prime locations. We continue to see good Bass reactions with crankbaits, 3/4oz slow-rolled War Eagle Spinnerbaits, and Rat-L-Traps in the creeks between 10-15 feet of depth. The best crankbaits drawing reactions over the past few weeks were Bomber Fat Free Shads, or Squarebill Cranks in craw patterns, and Bandit Cranks in brown/orange Crawfish patterns. Rat-L-Traps and Echo 1.75's in shad patterns like Millwood Magic, red chrome, Toledo Gold, and Squarebills and Echo 1.75's in Rayburn Red Craw, Pinch'n Peach, or Ghost Minnow continue working near mid-day warmer periods, in back of the oxbows away from muddy Little River current flows, in creek channels where clarity maybe slightly better than close to Little River current flows. These are still drawing random reactions, by deflecting the Traps around and over stumps in creek channels with any cypress trees, standing timber, and stumps. Bulky, fat tube jigs like 4" Gizzits, Brush Hogs, Bass Assassin Jingle Bugs, or lizards, 10-12" bulky Worms, and Real Deal Custom Tackle Jigs continue taking a few chunky, Largemouths in the creek channels from 10-15 feet deep on stumps, and on primary points with stumps from 6-10 feet deep. Green Pumpkin, Pumpkinseed/chartreuse, chartreuse pumpkin, and Blackberry colors continue to be good colors for soft plastic brush hogs or lizards from solitary Bass. A slow moving, Real Deal Custom Tackle jig in Texas Craw, Black/blue, Amber/chartreuse, or June Bug, with black craw trailer continue this week getting a few good reaction bites near stumps, from 9-12 feet of depth in outer bends of creeks and ditches with cypress trees.

Magnum 4" Gizzit Tubes with internal rattles, are still drawing a few solid hits from solitary, 2-3 pound Largemouth Bass on stumps in outer creek channel bends, ditches, wash-outs, ridges, and points in the oxbows. Best colors of tube jigs and Gizzits over the past couple weeks are Black Neon, Black/Blue tail, and Pumpkinseed or Green Pumpkin with tail tentacles dipped in JJ Magic Chartreuse dipping dye. Pitching the gizzits on stumps from multiple angles seems to initiate a reaction in mid-day warmer periods. Slow rolling, heavy 3/4 oz War Eagle Spinnerbaits in white/chartreuse, or Hot Mouse colors continue getting good reactions in the oxbows fished slow from 7-10 feet of depth. If the water clarity is heavier stained, we are switching over to a Fire Tiger color in the dirtier water.

White Bass: with water continues warming as it has since late last week, a few White Bass were caught on Yo Yo's up Little River between White Cliffs and McGuire Oxbow. They evidently moving, and staging in preparation for their annual spawning runs up the Little River to headwaters above highway 71 bridge.

Crappie: continue improving in the oxbows, clearest water you can find being the most activity areas, and are stacked up vertically over planted brush with jigs from 12-15 feet of depth. Best colors of jigs over the past week or so have been black/chartreuse, white/chartreuse, or blue/chartreuse.

Cats: continue biting well on trot lines set in the current of Little River set from 15-20 feet deep. Yo-Yos set from cypress trees over 8-12 feet deep in back of Mud Lake are still catching some nice 3-5 lb cats. Punch bait, chicken livers and gizzards, & Catalpa Worms have been working for cats over the last several weeks on the Yo-Yos.

Millwood Lake and Little River conditions worsened from last week with the inflow and increase of current in Little River. Conditions are still cautious due to debris in Little River. There are numerous missing river marker buoys from Yarborough point to Paraloma Trail. Several more missing along Little River from Paraloma to the clear cut on main lake. Clarity worsened from last week, and lake level jumped back to almost a foot above normal pool. USACE gate flow at the Millwood Dam was decreased recently as normal pool nears achievement. Elevation remains approx 12" above normal conservation pool, rising with increased current of Little River is around 10,000 CFS. Exercise increased caution during navigation on Millwood Lake along Little River with the changing release rates and river flow conditions, as some debris and logs are present in current flow and discharge rates. Always use caution during navigation along Little River with current, or high flow conditions. Expect to see normal pool possibly by next week with no additional rainfall.

**** Be Advised, there are at least 2 BROKEN, MISSING, or DAMAGED BOAT LANE MARKERS ON THE "LITTLE GAS LINE TO HIGHLINE BOAT LANE" FROM RECENT FLOOD DAMAGE. USE EXTREME CAUTION IN THE UPPER END OF THE BOAT LANE FROM THE HIGH LINE TO THE LITTLE GAS LINE CUTOFF AND WATCH FOR MISSING OR DAMAGED TELEPHONE POLE LANE MARKERS! THERE ARE NUMEROUS MISSING RIVER BUOYS FROM YARBOROUGH TO PARALOMA TRAIL ALONG LITTLE RIVER! USE EXTREME CAUTION IN NAVIGATION WITH DEBRIS SCATTERED ALONG LITTLE RIVER AND MISSING RIVER BUOY MARKERS!!! USE EXTREME CAUTION IN NAVIGATION ALONG LITTLE RIVER UNTIL THE USACE HAS HAD SUFFICIENT TIME TO REPLACE MISSING RIVER BUOYS AND POLE MARKERS!!

Surface temps as of Monday, are ranging in the 47ºF early to 53ºF range, depending on location and time of day.

Normal consv. pool is 259.2 ft-msl. Monday pool is 260.2 ft-msl. The tailwater level is near 232 ft-msl and rising. Wear your life jacket and kill switch and watch for obstructions, floaters, broken limbs, logs, and debris along Little River during navigation. New NO-WAKE ZONE in effect at White Cliffs Campground on the river, and marked with river buoys. Be advised, no tolerance of boat wakes within the marked area, is being enforced by AGFC along the river. Watch for increased current and debris in Little River.

Clarity and visibility worsened from recent thunderstorms over the past couple days. As of Monday on main lake structure away from current, clarity & visibility ranges approx 5-6 inches. Little River's visibility is stained up river, the river clarity ranges 3-4 inches depending on location and current. The oxbow's clarity currently ranging approx 10-20 inches depth of visibility depending on location. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, rain, or thunderstorms.

Wear your Life Jacket and kill switch!! If you are suddenly or unexpectedly thrown from your boat, it could be your only chance of survival. Use caution navigating Little River in low light conditions, SLOW DOWN, and pass friendly to other boaters! As always, careful watch for any random floaters and debris in Little River's current, and wearing your PFD and kill switch is a requirement!
