Mark Reavis Savannah, Georgia his visiting fishing friend Gavin Thomas Hansen age 12 Pensacola, Florida, and Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charters

While inshore catching with Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy

Charters Mark Reavis Savannah and his young fishing buddy Gavin Thomas Hansen age 12 Pensacola, Florida had a fishing blast! Before boarding Captain Garrett explained to Mark and Gavin the current ridiculous windy conditions that prevailed. Yes the winds were howling, yes it was very bumpy in the river, and yes Captain Garrett was going to be limited to the spots that he could successfully fish. Mark and Gavin never flinched, being true fishermen that they are; they smiled and said, “Let’s go fishing!” And that’s exactly what they did! Gavin caught 39 whiting on light tackle! On the way home Gavin asked, “Is there any way we could catch a few shrimp for me to take home for of dinner? Why? Because his mother would love some very fresh shrimp! What did they have for dinner? Of course they had whiting and yes Gavin brought home some very fresh just caught shrimp for dinner! Now here’s a question? Are live shrimp better used for fishing or dinner? In this case yep! They are super good for both!

    Inshore Fishing Report
Well, I have to say we had lots of wind, lots of extremely high tides, and lots of muddy water conditions to content with this past weekend! I sound like a broken record!
The inshore catching was a little tough, but our inshore captains did manage to catch a few. Once again the secret to a successful inshore catching day is having the right bait. And of course that bait is hands down live shrimp. However, sometimes getting this bait is almost impossible to purchase much less catch. The next live bait is going to be our cold water bait delight, which is the ever popular mud minnow. And of course, the last bait is going to be dead shrimp, which in some cases can save your fish day!

For those fishermen that feel comfortable going the artificial route I suggest using shrimp patterns! (Impregnated with scent or not!) But to use artificial successfully you will need to believe in them in the first place! So let says, “You believe!” I suggest presenting the bait with the accompaniment of a popping cork. Why? Well, tying a shrimp pattern 3 feet below a popping cork, casting it into place and coming up with a signature popping sequence sometimes works just like the real darn thing!

While inshore fishing with Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charters Daniel Braun and Audrey Chait (both visiting from Ohio) had a catching blast! And they caught their dinner times two!

We have started seeing lots of schools of small, medium, and large blue fish in45 to 60 feet of water!

    Offshore Report
    Artificial Reefs
Located in less than 50 feet of water!

The forerunner top water fish have arrived. We caught school blues and saw lots of surface feeding little tunny this past week in about 45 feet of water. And we also had a pair of large and larger size cobia give us a swim by! We also caught a few trophy red fish while plain old bottom fishing with small pieces of squid! Now the keeper black fish populations have increased. Last week we caught 30 to 1 black sea bass to be able to keep one! Yesterday we caught 25 to 1! Numbers don’t lie! It is getting better!
Yep..the water temps have not reached a solid 65 yet! However, the forerunner fish are here! Spring has sprung!

And we still got a winter time sheepshead bite going on!

Beautiful colors! This is a male black sea bass!

In more than 50 feet of water!

Keeper black sea bass populations are getting much better at this depth. How? You most likely will have to catch/release 10 fish before you can keep one! Heck, that’s easy and fun too! Along with bass we are catching trigger fish, flounder, scup, blue fish, red fish, white bone porgy, and ring tail perch. What is a ring tail perch? It is a fish that feeds in the upper water meaning in this case about four to six feet above the bottom. We also call this fish “A McDonald’s Special! So if the sea bass bite slows, drop to the bottom, give it a few reels up, and you will find another bite just waiting to be had!
When it comes to catching black sea bass it is better to catch a few and move to another spot. If you keep fishing the same bottom over and over you will most likely put a scattering on the fish. However, if you drop a few times, catch a few fish, and then move to another spot your success for keeping fish will be much better! The best bait for this fish is going to be squid and fresh cut fish. However, this fish is a serious member in good standing with the glutton family. So therefore, anything placed on your hook will just about work! What does that mean? Squid, cut fish, shrimp, old cigar minnows from last year, cut up ballyhoo from last year...also for those fishermen that have forgotten the bait....well fried chicken, ham, steak, and anything from your lunch that will stay on a hook will work..and how did I know that for a fact? Well, At one time, I guess I left the bait at the dock!

Back in the old days, sometimes we did not pack a lunch, which could be bad especially if the bait was forgotten. However, don’t despair; a small piece of white t-shirt put on your hook will also work. I suggest hooking it up so that some of the shirt is allowed to waves in the current! Yep, this works too! Another fish catching lesson learned the hard way!

While plain old bottom fishing with a very small piece of squid Gerald Williams Augusta, Georgia hooked up a nice one! Captain Kathy Brown of Miss Judy Charter is holding a nice white bone porgy, which Mr. Gerald just caught! Yep! It was put promptly in the fish box! According to Mr. Gerald this fish is going to yield the makings for some delicious fish sandwiches’!

Captain Ali Young on the stern of the Miss Judy Too in the nineties doing what she did best, which was catching blue water fish! This yellow fin was caught at R 8 Naval Tower! It was caught before the loud R 8 naval tower horn got stuck! Who remembers that?

Savannah Snapper Banks and or Gulf Stream!
Captain Ryan Howard of Miss Judy Charters is ready set go!
Need I say more! It is time to go!

While inshore fishing with Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charters Audrey Chait Ohio caught this nice red fish!

While inshore fishing with Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy Charters the fantastic fishing four had a catching blast! As you can see they caught quite a few whiting while using small pieces of shrimp for bait! What was for dinner? Baked whiting, fried whiting fingers, blacken whiting, grilled whiting, whiting fish stew, and I think you get cooking options!

Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy Charter is getting ready to clean some fish! Yes, his customer caught them and he cleaned them!

    Lake Lanier fishing report

The fishing on Lanier is getting hot. Water temperature is rising and the fish are becoming more active. The water level is still at an extremely high level, which has got some effect on where the fish are located. However trolling with the Mini Mack umbrella rig has produced some fish while searching has paid off and dropping down lines on the schools are paying off. We have had a good week using these two techniques to boat many stripers. The crappie are starting to go on bed and we have had a good time running weed lines and pulling out many nice slabs casting jigs along the banks. Thanks for everything and I hope you enjoy this report. What does all of this boil down too? If you want freshwater fishing call Mickey, if you want saltwater fishing call Captain Judy! It is so simple!!
