LAKE LANIER IS 2.1 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE VERY STAINED. 60S

Currently the lake stands at 2.1 feet over full pool, and sits around 68 degrees surface temperature. The lake came up almost 2 feet last weekend, and has receded about 1/2 foot since. The backs of the live creeks in the lower lake are stained. The Main River and coves above Brown's Bridge up to Little Hall are surprisingly clear.

Bess fishing is excellent. Pretty much pick how and where you want to catch them and go after it. A jerk bait, spinnerbait, fluke, and even some top water have been productive, and of course a worm. The Georgia Blade Spinnerbait on shallow rock has been the deal for us this week. Shallow is the word for the fish we have been on focus on 10 feet and less. Points, humps, rocks, docks all have fish on them. A Spro McStick is a good choice for the jerk bait. A fluke has been very productive around shallow rock and cover this past week. Also, these baits will work back shallow in the creeks as well. Some days the wood in these areas is holding fish also, so make sure to make some casts to the now many pieces of flooded cover. When the fish aren't chasing, the worm on a shaky head is hard to beat. Consider downsizing your worm if the bite is tough or you are missing fish. A whacky rigged Senkos is also a good option in the worm category as well. Its time get out and fish and have fun. Here are my remaining open dates: April: 30(PM). May: 9, 15, 16, 21(PM), 22(PM), 29, 30(PM). Give me a call and let's get out and enjoy the great weather and excellent fishing.

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s
    website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

This week we’ve seen a drastic change in water temperature. The lowest that we saw was 58 degrees (this past weekend). Water temps yesterday were approaching 70 degrees! (Of course, that is surface water temperature). If we had this temperature change in the winter, it would have had a much greater effect on the fishing pattern, but for this time of year, it is almost insignificant. The fish have completed their spawn and have already moved into their post spawn pattern. The last month and a half we have been targeting shallower docks, blow downs, and rip rap. The fish have now moved to deeper docks in 15 to 20 foot depths. At those depths, the change in surface water temp has little effect. We are zeroing in on creek and river channel docks, and fishing is great. We are scanning docks with our side imagery, and locating fish. Brush piles outside or near docks are an added bonus. We suspect that schools of crappie will be moving to stand alone brush piles within the next couple of weeks, as the water temps continue to creep up. May is a good month to fish stand alone brush piles that are located in a drop off near a creek channel. Crappie like a little current, but also need structure for protection from predators. We are beginning to scan those brush piles for signs of the bigger schools of fish. Also, the flats are a good place for stand alone brush piles IF you see signs of bait in the area. 1/32 and 1/24 oz. jig heads are working equally well. With the lighter jig head, give it time to sink slowly to the depth the fish are suspended before retrieving. Hair jigs and soft body jigs are both working well. The lake level has gone up, and the northern parts of the lake are heavily stained. Use darker jigs there. As you head south and see the stain lessening, use brighter colored jigs. Unfortunately, floating debris is again a factor, so be careful. As die hard fishermen, we fish for crappie all year long. We take advantage of and enjoy the peace and quiet of the lake in the winter time and during hunting season. This time of year, we are seeing a lot more fishermen along with pleasure boaters on the lake and boat ramps are getting crowded. But, those folks have just as much right to enjoy the lake as we do. So, exercise patience and courtesy as we approach the full swing of spring and summer. Wear your life jacket it can save your life!
