Bass fishing is excellent. Pretty much pick how and where you want to catch them and go after it A spinnerbait, Keitech, fluke, and even some top water have been productive, and of course a worm. The Georgia Blade Spinnerbait on shallow rock has remained good for us this week, as has swimming a Keitech on a jig head. Shallow is the word for the fish we have been our focus on 10 feet and less. Points, humps, rocks, docks all have fish on them. A Zoom Super Fluke has been very productive around shallow rock and cover this past week. Also, these baits will work back shallow in the creeks as well. Some days the wood in these areas is holding fish also, so make sure to make some casts to the now many pieces of flooded cover. When the fish aren't chasing, the worm on a shaky head is hard to beat. Consider downsizing your worm if the bite is tough or you are missing fish. A whacky rigged Senkos is also a good option in the worm category as well. Here are my open dates remaining in May: 21(PM). Give me a call and let's get out and enjoy the great weather and excellent spring fishing! Also, my June dates will fill up fast. If you want a top water trip, now is the time to book!

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

Water temperatures are in the low to mid-seventies. Fishing conditions are good, with the fish feeding well and gaining the weight back that they lost during the spawn. They are pulling out to deeper docks, as always, with structure. It is an added bonus if you can find a good sized brush pile outside the dock. In this case, stay thirty to forty feet away from the dock and cast your jig to the other side of the brush. Jig it slowly over the brush toward the boat. You may want to experiment and let it fall a little into the brush. If this does not produce a bite, ease toward the brush pile with your trolling motor on low speed, and try vertical jigging. In this instance, a live minnow works as well as a jig. Also, if a dock happens to be empty without a boat in it, try pitching your minnow or jig into the darkest spot in the dock. That should trigger a bite. This time of the year, four pound high visibility line is very critical since the fish are deeper and the bite is harder to detect. One twenty fourth ounce or one sixteenth ounce soft body jigs and hair jigs are our recommendation. If you are using live bait, use the lightest split shot you can get away with, and let it fall slowly. Some fish are gradually moving onto standalone brush piles in the backs of creeks. Those brush piles are in twenty to twenty five feet of water, topping out at ten to fifteen feet below the surface. As always, the more brush piles you hit and the more docks you fish, the better your chances of boating more fish. If a spot isn’t working, move on. A few mid to large sized fish is about average per stop. So if your hits are yielding only smaller fish, don’t waste your time move on to explore other docks or brush piles where you are likely to find larger fish. Stay safe on the water, WEAR YOUR LIFE JACKET!

On a separate note, which I’m sure will be a topic of conversation at our next meeting, several of our club members fished in the Crappie USA Tournament Trail held last weekend on Lake Hartwell. The Lanier Crappie Anglers really shined! In the amateur division, our tournament director, Randy Koch with his brother Rod Koch came in first. David Smith and Stacy Rollin came in at second place in the same division. The “one and only” Don Whidbey along with his friend Chris Craft placed third! In the Pro Division, Jerry Stanton and Pat Welch made a strong showing by coming in 2nd place. These men have played and continue to play a major role in our club. When we say we have the “best of the best” fishermen in our club, the proof is in the pudding! Share your congratulations when you see them well done, guys!
