  • Millwood Lake Fishing Report - AR

As of Monday, 15 July, in the middle of July in sw Arkansas, we gotta recent break from the heat, and the lake level on Millwood is nearing normal conservation pool. Millwood is currently approx between 2-3" inches above normal conservation pool and falling (as of Monday) at 259.4 ft-msl; and the discharge was near 1950 CFS in Little River according to the USACE. The tailwater below the dam and gates, as of Monday is falling, approx 230 ft-msl. Water temps stable over the past week. Be sure and check the most recent lake level of Millwood Lake on our website helpful links page, or at the US Army Corps of Engineers website for updated gate release changes and inflow rates with rising and falling lake levels and conditions.

We would expect to see a big change, and a rising lake elevation over the next week due to recent flash flooding in sw Arkansas near the tri-Lakes of Gillam, Dierks, and DeQueen Lakes.

Be advised USACE has a planned drawdown for Millwood Lake to commence in mid-July. Use caution navigating on Millwood Lake during affected drawdown conditions when stumps, timber and debris will be at or near surface pool!!

***Be Advised, there are at least 2 BROKEN, MISSING, or DAMAGED BOAT LANE MARKERS ON THE NORTH END OF "LITTLE GAS LINE TO HIGHLINE BOAT LANE" FROM RECENT FLOOD DAMAGE***.

USE EXTREME CAUTION IN THE UPPER END OF THE BOAT LANE FROM THE HIGH LINE TO THE LITTLE GAS LINE CUTOFF AND WATCH FOR MISSING OR DAMAGED TELEPHONE POLE LANE MARKERS and NUMEROUS RIVER BUOYS are MISSING along Little River from Yarborough to main lake clear-cut.

USACE are working to replacing all the missing buoy markers in Little River.

NO-WAKE ZONES are in effect at White Cliffs Campground on Little River.

Surface temps as of Monday, are ranging near 80ºF early to 89ºF range later under full sun, depending on location. Continue to use caution in navigation on Little River and Millwood watching for random, broken, or floating timber.

Clarity and visibility continue improving over the past week, but remain stained in places, especially up river. The main lake and lower sections of Little River continue to improve, are not quite as stained or muddy as the upper regions of Little River and Saline River. As of Monday on main lake structure away from current, clarity & visibility is moderate stain, ranging approx 10-15 inches. Little River's visibility ranges 5-7 inches with heavy to moderate stain, depending on location and current. The oxbow's clarity currently ranging approx 18-24 inches depth of visibility depending on location. Clarity and visibility can change dramatically on Millwood in just a few hours with high winds, rain, or thunderstorms.

    The Details:

Largemouth Bass: Bass activity continues to be best early morning and late afternoon around dusk, best from dawn to around 9-10am. Largemouth Bass have remained active from dawn to around 9am; cloud cover mornings remain to be best overall surface activity, over the past few weeks. The bite slows considerably during the heat of the day. Best baits drawing reactions, over the past week or so have been BuzzBaits, plastic Frogs, and Bass Assassin Shads on a light wire hook working in new Lily Pad growth. Heddon Dying Flutters and Johnson Silver Minnows with a grub trailer, are still working at daybreak. Best color of frogs have been Snot Rocket or Black, in new lily pads. Hot Firecracker or Hot Spot Remover BuzzBaits are working at dawn. Slow-rolling chatterbaits near flooded bushes and stumps will draw random strikes, with firecracker and hot mouse being good colors in stained water. StutterSteps, Spit'n Images, Ken Pops, Pop R's and Moss Bosses continue to draw random reactions from Largemouths, around grass, vegetation and lily pads. Topwater activity levels have slowed later in the day with the increased heat over the past couple weeks, with the random exception of schooling yearling Bass, Kentucky's, and Whites, near daybreak in the oxbows.
S-cranks, Echo 1.75's, and medium depth Bomber cranks are still working, by deflecting and banging them off standing timber or stumps, from 6-9 feet deep, will take a few random, bass around 14-15" in length. Best color of cranks in the oxbows, like the S-cranks, Echo 1.75 squarebills, and Bomber Fat Free Shads, for the past few weeks have been the Bold Bluegill, Ghosts, and Citrus Shad or Tennessee Shad. Rat-L-Traps in Millwood Magic and White Smoke will get a slow, random reaction from 15-18" Bass over the past couple weeks in creek channels leading in and out of spawning flats worked slower and deeper in the creeks. Squarebill S-cranks and shallow running crankbaits in shad or bluegill and bream patterns are working near creek mouths and points extending into the oxbows for the past week or so, as Largemouths have pulled out to deeper sections of creek channels and points dumping into the oxbows. Working the cranks in a stop and go, slow retrieve will draw a better reaction than fast retrieves.

Bang Skunk Apes, have been working for the last couple weeks deeper into the creek channels. Best colors for the past couple weeks working best have been South African Special, PB&J, Watermelon Candy, black/blue, and black neon.

Heavy, big, bulky 10"-12" worms are picking up a few random reactions from Largemouth Bass in creek channels, creek mouths dumping into oxbows, and points. Yum 10" Ribbon Tails, 10" Power worms, and Ole Monster 10"-12" worms in Black/blue, Plum, Cranberry, or Blue Fleck colors have been drawing random reactions from lethargic, Largemouths along steeper ledges, and near stumps and cypress trees in creek channels and near creek mouth junctions, points, and intersecting feeder creeks dumping into the oxbows. Real Deal Custom Tackle jigs in black/blue, Texas Craw, or PB&J are catching a few random Bass from 4-6 pounds near cypress trees and knees early, as these fish are dropping out into 9-12 feet of depth as the sun rises higher in the sky mid-day.

White Bass: Whites have been found a couple weeks ago, schooling on shad in the oxbows at dawn, and surface breaking on shad and bait in Horseshoe and McGuire Lakes in the oxbows up Little River where water clarity is best. Hammered Cordell Spoons with red/white bucktails, Chrome/black or chrome/blue, and Millwood Magic colored Rat-L-Traps, Spin Traps, and Bomber Fat Free Guppy cranks in Citrus Shad were catching these surface schoolers breaking on shad.

Crappie: have been consistently biting jigs and minnows near cypress trees, for the past several weeks well, and 4-8' deep Cypress trees holding fish early, and planted brush piles out of River current from 8-12 feet deep holding fish later in the day. Crappie over the past couple weeks continue to be transitioning to deeper drops, near standing timber or planted brush piles but can still be caught early on base of cypress trees. They have been best vertical jigging minnows, Arkie Jigs, and minnows. Best bite is early from dawn til around 10am shallow on Cypress trees with minnows.

Cats: Channel Cats and Blues are still feeding in Little River, up to 3-4 lbs, on trot lines and yo-yo's set 10-15 feet deep in Little River using cut bait, or spoiled chicken livers. Yo-yo's set under Cypress trees, using cut shad and buffalo, in Mud Lake, from 9-10 feet hung from tree limbs were catching some decent blues over the past couple weeks.

Wear your Life Jacket and kill switch!! If you are suddenly or unexpectedly thrown from your boat, it could be your only chance of survival. Use caution navigating Little River in low light conditions, SLOW DOWN, and pass friendly to other boaters! As always, careful watch for any random floaters and debris in Little River's current, and wearing your PFD and kill switch is a requirement!
