While offshore fishing with Captain Ryan Howard of Miss Judy Charters one of his customers caught this nice big red snapper during the keeping season! KC Childress, Savannah, Georgia didn’t catch this 37 inch 32 pound genuine mega red snapper. However, she did do her part in showing it off! You go girl!

    Doubled up!
While inshore fishing with Captain Kevin Rose (white t-shirt) of Miss Judy Charters Jefferson Love (dark t-shirt) Jackson Missouri had a catching, releasing, and keeping kind of a day!

After hunkering down for Dorian I dusted the cobwebs off by taking lifelong friend and touring musician Jefferson Fox out for a quick morning catching session. The log books paid off and the fish were right where they told me they would be. We boated several large and small Redfish with a couple fat 22 15/16 inch line painters. When the Redfish bite slowed a few flounder made the cooler and we picked up and hit some other drops on the way back breaking off several 35-40” fish in a foot of water. Live shrimp was the ticket. Jefferson was a guitar student of mine years ago and since moving back to Missouri he doesn’t get much saltwater fishing in unless he’s touring. Thankful we were spared Dorians full wrath and for fishing friends like Jefferson.

    Inshore fishing report
Even after all of this turbulence weather the inshore bite has still continued to get more dependable! I can’t believe that the summer months have flown by so fast and that we are now looking at the month of September. I call this month the transition time! Why? There is less daylight every day, but by the time September rolls around it is darn noticeable to the fishermen and the fish. No matter how you look at it bite patterns and food sources for fish are going to start to change.

The inshore bite this past weekend was pretty darn good. Inshore fishermen can throw the cast net, catch some live shrimp for bait and who knows you might have enough left over for a snack before dinner. And since there is live shrimp to be caught or purchased and this is the bait the fish want! It’s a win! win! While using popping corks and traditional adjustable floats spotted sea trout and flounder were caught. Most of the fish caught were netters! What’s a netter? It is a fish that needs to definitely be brought on board while using a dip net. In other words, grabbing the leader and trying to drag the fish in over the gunnel most likely will result a quick non-scheduled release.

The red fish bite was also pretty good this past weekend! Inshore fishers, while using live shrimp or finger mullet as bait, had some pretty good catches! They caught rat reds, which are too small to keep! Slot reds, which are just the right size meaning fitting between 14-23 inches. And then there are those large red fish better known as trophy red fish! And Yep there were some nice one caught fought and released this past week!

For those fishermen that want to do a little sight casting now is the time. It’s best when giving this type of fishing a try that everyone is on board that is on board! Quiet is the word! The old red fish can pick up even the smallest unusual noise. The best artificial baits to use at this time are going to be soft style shrimp patterns. I suggest pitching to where you think this fish is heading! And here’s another suggestion, which is a crazy one, sometimes casting behind the school alerts them not scares them!

Art Ohmer Savannah Georgia, with the help of Captain Ryan Howard of Miss Judy Charters, is showing off his just caught king mackerel! This king hit a mid column fished ruby red lips! Heck, I almost forgot it was dressed up with a tinsel dark green flash skirt!

A Most likely Baiting up Scenario!
Here’s what I know about bait? Yep, you can catch your own! What does this mean? It is time to get out the old cast net! According to bait catching report I received from Captain Kevin Rose of Miss Judy Charters the cast net catching ratio goes like this: You most likely are going to catch some nice white shrimp and the most likely are going to have black lung. Breaking down the 100% of you throwing the old cast net catch..you most likely are going to want to fish with 80% and there most likely will be about 20% eatable size! What does all this boil down too? Plenty of bait, which will definitely help in regards to getting a more solid inshore bite and an afternoon shrimp cocktail just might be in your future!

    Artificial Reefs
Just a few more minutes of less daylight a day can make all the difference in the world to a fish! Why? When this takes place it means fall is in the air, which also means winter time conditions are just around the corner. Fish are always prompted to start getting ready for a season’s change. And how do they do this? They start bulking up, which is better known “putting on the old fed bag!” with this being said, “The bottom fishing at the artificial reefs is just about to pick up!” So now that you have this information on board I suggest that you give bottom fishing a trying no matter what! Sooner or later those bottom fish are going to arrive! And they are going to be hungry too!
As far as the top water bite, well the artificial reef area, is still on a wide open mode. And this should last until about the first week of December! So what’s on tap...Spanish/kings/little tunny/barracuda/blue fish/shark!
So with this information I suggest when loading up the bait box that you bring it all or bring none and catch your own! If you are bringing bait I suggest squid, cigar minnows, and ballyhoo.
    Sabiki Bait Rigs!
If you are going to catch your own bait I suggest having
on board 6 plus sabiki bait rigs. With these rigs you will be able to catch some nice prefect size live baits. And those watching, such as the bigger fish, are going to do their best to prove to you that they like those baits. How? They are going to attack your hooked up bait as your try reeling it in! One suggestion is to catch a few in one spot and then move to another. If you don’t 6 plus sabiki bait rigs are certainly not going to be enough!
    Savannah Snapper Bank
If you want to catch a fish just about every time you drop your hook it time to go to the Savannah Snapper Banks....bottom fishing is great and the top fish bite is too....
