  • Savannah Fishing Report - GA

Captain Robert Brown of Miss Judy Charters takes a busman’s holiday! What does this mean? Well, he took a couple of friends to do a little inshore fishing! Captain Robert took Jason Johnson (blue jacket) and Lenny Wojnowich (both from Savannah) on an inshore cold water catching affair! As you can see from photo above they had a grand fishing day! Check out those nice spotted sea trout! What did they eat? Live shrimp under assorted floats! Now for the when, where, and why portion of this report! When? It was a mid morning bite! Where? Under the water and hooked in the mouth! Why? Cause the fish was hungry and Captain Robert knew exactly where to go! Now for who part! Lenny caught the most and Jason came in second!

    Inshore fishing report!
Well, well, my dear inshore fishermen we all were in dated with inches of rain and windy conditions this past week. And to top this all off our water temperature dropped to the mid fifties, which most likely always prompts a big change in the way the fish feed and locations of those that do! However, it seems that the rain and wind had little effect on our previous situation before the rain and wind! Captain Matt Williams, Captain Garrett Ross, and Captain Robert Brown (all of Miss Judy Charters) gave it a try on Sunday with all thinking what they were they going to be dealing with. Well, it seems that mostly what they dealt with was catching fish. The captains caught spotted sea trout and red fish! Some were keepers and some were released! But let me say this, “The ones they kept were some very nice size fish!”

While inshore fishing with Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy Charters Sean Compton Savannah, Georgia caught the beautiful 23 ½ inch-er spotted sea trout! And it is a definite beauty too! Now the burning question.. is this fish still swimming or not? Yep, it is still swimming! Sean and his party for three caught fought and released every fish! How many did they catch? After twenty they basically stopped counting!
    Let’s talk about Bait!
Believe it or not but most shrimp that were caught this past week were done so while casting in shallow water. Normally when water temperatures drop like they did the shrimp high tail it to the deeper water. Who knows they just might have not had time to do so! Anyhow, cast in the areas you normally do so after the water leaves the grass and if that doesn’t work give the deeper spots a try. You know what this means I suggest not leaving the dock without loading up both types of cast nets! One for shallow water and one for the deeper holes! And of course it is time to come up with your catching mud minnows plan. And also for those that know the whereabouts of finger mullet, well this is also great bait especially when used alive! But the fresh dead ones will work too!

All fishermen are from Savannah, are very good at catching fish, and enjoy doing so

Matt Stamm blue sweat shirt (all from Fayetteville, West Virginia)

This is what they crew caught and they released the rest! What on the cooler? Black sea bass, blue fish, ocean perch sometimes referred to as ring tail perch trigger fish, and Spanish mackerel. What not on the table? Dozens of caught fought and released unharmed assorted sizes genuine red snapper!
    Artificial Reefs
After about mid-week I didn’t get to go offshore due to prevailing rainy and windy conditions stopped any of these fishing opportunities! However, I did get to go the first of the week and the fishing was pretty darn good. While bottom fishing in about 55 feet of water over live bottom and structure we caught some really nice black sea bass, trigger fish, blue fish, summer trout, and white bone porgy. Not only did we catch fish on the bottom we also did a little trolling and yes the Spanish mackerel are still here. Although I didn’t get to give any live lining or trolling for king mackerel a try I would bet that these fish are still here. After all our so called winter run of king mackerel that takes place at the artificial reefs and the Savannah Snapper banks most likely is still in full throttle mode! I am going to bet losing my bait on it!
    Savannah Snapper Banks
Don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but you still have time to make a run to the banks. Lots of fish are there and the action normally is very interesting! We got top water fish and bottom fish! What kind? Well, you got to go so that you will know! And whatever you do, please bring me into the information link!

While fishing at the Savannah Snapper Banks David Miller Blue Ash, Ohio and his son Christopher really did partake in the catching a lot deed! Although it is not spring nor summer time we still caught some really nice cobia. Who showed them the way? Me, Captain Judy! What’s on the cooler? The strong father son team caught cobia, trigger fish, vermilion snapper, black sea bass, white bone porgy, ring tail perch, and of course lots of genuine red snapper!

Captain Garrett Ross of Miss Judy Charter took Ty Dohrman age 14 and his father Stewart (Savannah, Georgia) to do a little inshore fishing. And here’s how it went! Well, they had a grand daywith Ty catching the most and the biggest! Or course, his father came in second! And who showed them the way? Captain Garrett!
How about this picture? All fishermen live for these kind of day on the ocean for sure! Our team from left to right on the rail are Matt Stamm, Jo-Beth Stamm, PJ Stevenson, and Sean Wishart all visiting from Fayetteville, West Virginia! At the fish cleaning table and my crew for the day is Alli “The Kid” DeYoung and Captain Deidra Helmey Jeffcoat! All can say at this day is fish with catching will certainly be a bonus! Why? We already are have a fine fish day!

A darn good selfie! What does this pictures say, “We are all going fishing!” Captain Judy is getting a little better when it comes to trying her best at getting a good picture! David Miller, Captain Deidra Helmey Jeffcoat, and David’s son Christopher! (From Blue Ash, Ohio)

David Miller Blue Ash, Ohio caught the fish that Captain Deidra is holding and Christopher Miller is holding the one he just landed. Now, this is what you call a “Double Header!” Why? David and Christopher hooked up, fought, landed, and got to hold their fish up together! And yes this is two very nice big trophy red fish! They are still swimming!

Captain Judy and Christopher Miller Blue Ash, Ohio is showing a grand fish catching smile! Christopher is holding a nice big beautiful trophy red fish that he caught fought and landed while fishing on the bottom in Wassaw Sound!

While sound fishing with Captain Judy Christopher Miller Blue Ash, Ohio caught this big trophy red fish! How? While fishing on the bottom with a fully loaded whiting steak! What is a fully loaded whiting steak? It’s a steak cut from a freshly caught whiting, which is taken from the medium section of the fish. In other words the guts are still intact! This is one fish that definitely smells at what it eats first!

Captain Deidra Helmey Jeffcoat is holding a nice little tunny that Christopher Miller Blue Ash, Ohio caught fought and landed while trolling a 00 Clark spoon! The rig used was a #2 planer with a 00 size Clark spoon about 15 feet in tow! This is one fish that offers some real time pulling adventure! Why? The little tunny does not easily give up and it always pulls with the intent of breaking free! It has a grand desire to live so therefore hook them up, fight them, and let them go!

Christopher Miller Blue Ash, Ohio caught fought and landed this little tunny while trolling a 00 Clark spoon! It was released back to the wild!

Christopher Miller Blue Ash, Ohio caught fought and landed the nice over 36 inch fork length cobia! And this is what could happen when your customer asked, “Can we make on more drift over this spot before we leave?” And we did and this is exactly what Christopher catch! Did we make another drift in the same spot? Heck, yes we did! I don’t have to be asked more than once!

Alli “The Kid” DeYoung is holding up a nice cobia that Christopher Miller Blue Ash, Ohio caught fought and landed while making a second drift over a drop! It is a nice one too!

Christopher Miller Blue Ash, Ohio and Alli “The Kid” DeYoung are both sporting a wonderful fishing catching smile! Yep, that is a nice cobia that Christopher caught while plain old bottom fishing at the artificial reefs!

Little Miss Judy’s Believe It or Not!

Well, this is me (Captain Judy with my captain’s cap on) trying to climb a tree. My friend is neighbor Michael Dunford! The photo was taken in my back yard. If the picture was taken more to the left you would have been able to see the horse stables. Of course, my father would never let me have a pony or a horse even though we did have a place to put them! I was not happy about this!
    Parent’s Logic

As a small child I always wanted a pony, but my father would never buy me one. It wasn’t because we didn’t have enough room, because we in fact had horse stables right on the property. His main reason for not letting me have a pony was because as he always said, “I would get run over by all of the traffic.” Boy, if he wanted to see traffic he ought to see it now. Back in the fifties on the Island where I was raised there wasn’t much traffic. So therefore I decided to do my own traffic count. In the mind of a seven year old it sounded like a good idea. I decided to lie in the road of which I did and count cars. I must have lain there a good hour before a car finally came by. Heck, I could have fell asleep. At any rate, after I felt that my experiment was concluded I decided to go and tell daddy. I knew that he would be very proud of me. It turns out that daddy wasn’t so proud of me. In fact I was put on restriction for laying in the stupid no traffic road.

When I wanted to go horseback riding he took me out to my Aunt Hattie’s farm, which was located on ever-busy highway 17. You must remember back in these old days super highway I-95 hadn’t even been thought of. As I got older I figured out that daddy either didn’t want to take care of a pony or he thought I would get tired of one! He held stead fast with his decision and I never got my pony.

However, I had a boat from the time that I was five years old! I guess according to my father drowning wasn’t an option in my case. However getting run over by the one car per hour that passed by our house was. I will never understand a parent’s logic!
