  • Snakehead Fish

3 snakehead fish have been caught in the Potomac River. My personal suspicion is that these fish escaped from a pond in Maryland where 6 adults and quite a few baby snakeheads were found and destroyed in 2003..

Currently the States of Virginia and Maryland are publicizing the catches and posting fliers along the river and at Tackle Stores and Marina's on the river.

I am posting these pictures here as an informational service... IF you should catch a fish that looks like this immediately kill it and make sure that you notify the Department of Fish and Wildlife in your state.

Here is a link to an article with more information.

Be advised that there is a fish in Kentucky and in Southern States called a grennell that looks a bit like the Snakehead fish. Wisconsin DNR accidentally released a snakehead fish that they shocked up in the Madison Lake Chain thinking it to be a grennell. If in doubt kill the fish and take it to authorities.
