I am wanting to get into it myself. One place I have found is rodbuilding.org. Look at the FAQ's it will answer alot of questions.
Rodbuilding.org is defintely the best place to get all of the info and ideas to begin. Another good place to start is Mudhole.com. On the home page at the top there is a link called rodbuilding101. There are a number of how-to videos that can be pretty helpful.
In addition to the blank and parts, you'll need epoxy for gluing the reel seat and handle, thread for wrapping the guides, flex coat or other epoxy for covering the thread wraps, a rod wrapper to help you wrap the guides in place, a drying motor for spinning the rod while the epoxy on the threads dry, and some time.
