Just picked up this unit and there are two "fishing modes" that I cant decide which to use. One is freshwater mode and the other is Shallow Water mode (up to 40'). I tend to think the shallow water mode but the manual says for shallow weedy lakes. So im wondering if it will show hard rocky bottoms with as good of detail. Any thoughts?

I use fresh water on an Elete 5. For all depths. Best thing to is go out in the afternoon and try em all. I know nothing about the HDI part of that equation.
Look up Dr Sonar on the web. Give him a call and he will recommend one of his dvd's for what you want to do. He knows more then anybody I have ever talked to at Lowrance or otherwise.
He is a scientist and uses an underwater camera side-by-side with his graph to verify what he is looking at. He put a couple of my friends quickly sleep one night when I showed them a video. You know who you are. Lol
