The fisheries division of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources seeks public input on a recommendation to place Floyd’s Fork Creek in Jefferson County under seasonal catch and release trout season regulations.
“Floyd’s Fork Creek has seen a tremendous increase in access due to the Parklands of Floyd’s Fork,” said Ron Brooks, director of fisheries for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. “We hope to increase use of Floyd’s Fork for trout.”
Under seasonal catch and release regulations, all trout caught from Oct. 1 through March 31 on a designated stream must be immediately released; only artificial baits must be used during this season. Kentucky has 14 streams under these regulations.
The fisheries division currently stocks 3,600 trout in Floyd’s Fork Creek each year, with stockings in March, April and October.
“This will provide a good venue for avid trout anglers to catch and release trout during the colder months and a good situation for those want to catch and eat trout after March 31 as well,” Brooks said. “There are two Fishing in Neighborhood (FINs) lakes in the Parklands of Floyd’s Fork where anglers may catch trout to eat during the winter months.”
The Parklands of Floyd’s Fork is a nationally recognized series of five parks that encompass both sides of Floyd’s Fork Creek from U.S. 60 downstream to U.S. 150. The upper two parks are open to the public now while the lower three will open to public use in 2015.
Brooks said those who want to give their opinion may call the fisheries division at 1-800-858-1549. People may also email comments to: fw.fisheries@ky.gov.
