Fish at night. I like hair jigs and grass or gravel points. Good luck.

I know it's a horrible month to fish but I will be going to camp on a island (no clue where at on the lake) September 11-14 with my wife and her family. I'll be taking my boat and would like to catch a few smallies. Any suggestions?

I would suggest trying to reserve a spot on First Island. think it's arguably the best island to camp on, although all are pretty good. There are grass beds directly in front of it (south). I have camped here several times and caught fish both times from the bank. A better suggestion would be to fish at night and at first light from a boat just to the south of the "c" shaped cove. A Tennessee license will be necessary for this area and the closest marina is Holly Creek. I think this is your best bet.
Don't overlook the large heads...pumpkinseed is the ticket...good luck. Chuck
I'm not over looking the largemouth I've just never fished in a actual smallmouth fishery, other than small creeks ky lake is the only other place I've caught a smallie. So the brown fish will be on the top of my list.
Tough time of year, but pick up a jig and youre liable to run into either one. Its a little early but you might catch a few on a jerkbait. We usually start down there in november
