More trout are coming to Lexington.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources is expanding its stocking of rainbow trout in Fayette County with new sites in the West Fork of Hickman Creek. The department currently stocks the lake at Jacobson Park with trout.

“The stockings in Hickman Creek will be first-time stockings,” said Jeff Ross, assistant director of fisheries for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. “We want people in the Lexington area to get out and enjoy them.”
Kentucky Fish and Wildlife employees plan to stock 1,000 rainbow trout in the creek next week, with fish divvied among three locations. The lake at Jacobson Park will also receive 3,500 trout next week. Trout will average between 9 and 11 inches in length.

All stockings are weather-dependent and may be delayed if extreme cold freezes the surface of these waters. Log on to the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife website at fw.ky.gov for current stocking information.

Department employees will place 250 trout in the West Fork of Hickman Creek in Belleau Woods Park. The park is located south of the city center near the intersection of Man O’War Boulevard and Tates Creek Road. Anglers may access the park, which is located behind the Tates Creek Center shopping complex, by turning onto Belleau Wood Drive from Wilson-Downing Road, then turning onto Forest Green Drive.

The department will also stock the creek with 250 trout a little further downstream at the pedestrian bridge in Veteran’s Park between Veteran’s Park Ballfield #1 and Veteran’s Park Elementary School, off Clearwater Way.
The third stocking site will include 500 rainbow trout at the Rockbridge Road access to Veteran’s Park.

“The Rockbridge area has a low-head dam that impounds a small area of the creek,” said Jeff Crosby, central fisheries district biologist for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. “It is chest deep through there and makes good winter habitat for trout. You’ll have public access to either side of the creek through that stretch.”

Adult anglers must have a trout permit in addition to a fishing license to keep these fish. A trout permit is included in the senior/disabled license and the Sportsman’s license.
