    Best of Cast

    Best of Cast

    They were once Grandpa’s favorites
Tucked away in old tackle boxes
Tangled, rusted and faded with time
    Some battle scarred
    Some discolored from neglect
Some too valuable to use or lose
All bring back memories of the past
    Of the good old times
    When old plugs
    On old steel rods
    Were the best of cast

    Man that's nice, Roy.

Dad passed in '85. Some of my most cherished keepsakes are his old lures. An olive green Lazy Ike I used to learn how to throw a baitcaster (after stealing his rod when he was out of town). A frog-colored Hula Popper, all the plastic skirt melted away, that he caught a 6-pounder out of Lake Reba on. Several Lucky 13s, battle-scarred, red and white - I'm not sure he knew they came in other colors. Black jitterbugs, rooster tails, and yep, even an old 5.5' steel rod with a cork handle I'm going to use someday.

I've got many of my dad's lures hanging up in my boat barn. I'll never use them, just like to look at them and reminisce.

I like the comment about the Hula popper with a melted skirt. I've got one like that. It was probably one of the first lures I ever bought as a young boy. Also a Jitter bug in the same state of rot!

Remember the old plastic tackle boxes and rubber worms? The dissimilar plastics would melt and fuse that worm right into the tray!!

I have many of my grandpa's and father's lures along with the old rods with steel. I have so many memories watching them catching bass with them. Ever so often I fish with a couple of them just to feel what it was like in those days.

Your poem was very nice and the thread and thoughts it promoted were equally as nice. I to remember the old stuff guys and have many baits I wouldn't fish with because I would not want to lose them. My Mother adored fishing and so did her father I got that from them. My Dad liked fishing but I got hunting from him. I have hunted and fished since I was old enough to walk basically and I will till I can't anymore.

My parents are gone but never forgotten and I think of them very often and always in the woods or on the water. The outdoors is my Church and will be forever.

Thanks Roy this thread made me smile and made my eyes water a bit.

Thanks for the kind words. There are some things that need to be remembered I feel.
