    Sultans of the Fly

    Sultans of the Fly

    From dreams
    Of the lady in “Bronze”
    With red and golden eyes
    They rise
    Before light
    It matters not
    If rain or snow
    They zip their suits
    To meet the freezing cold
    They gather well-prepared gear
    The long rod
    The fireline spooled reel
    A three-way swivel
    A special cut bobber,
    Fluorocarbon leader
    And duck-feather fly
    Across the black cold water
    In white spray they go
    To well known weed beds
    Cuts and points
    There’s no competition
    There’s no one else around
    In dawn’s first light
    They load their rods
    The bobber goes down
They are the Sultans of the Fly

When I fished with Elwood with the fly, there is no one as hard nailed as him when it came to being serious about fishing with the fly. His tackle and rods and reels had to be perfect the night before. He was a well thought out F&F machine. He would be up way before light in the worst of weather and be going down the lake full out with out any protection on his face. And he was not alone. There were others as much dedicated, and if you are reading this you know who you are. These fly guys are tuff to the bone, but the rewards are great when you bring a 6 to 8 lb brown fish to boat on F&F rod. I don't think anything can match that battle. Thanks for the kind words.
