Just received a message from a buddy at KDFWR and after review, the state Ichthyologist and Fisheries Asst. Director and other biologists have all come to the same conclusion that it is a smallmouth/largemouth Hybrid and is incredibly rare!

Caught this Wednesday (my birthday) out on Cedar Creek, obvious markings of a smallie but upon closer inspection could be a MeanMouth. I have KDFWR biologists looking at it to see if they can tell, I also saved a scale from it for potential DNA testing. Let me know what you guys think it is...besides being an awesome fish!! Strange fish for sure but i thought a meanmouth was a smallie/spot offspring. I caught one at dale, and the only reason im sure it was a meanmouth is because i couldnt figure out which one it was

Crazy times we live in today. Even the fish are having an identity crisis lol... Nice fish and I don't see another boat in the picture trying to move in on you.
I think "meanmouth" can apply to both. From what I understand the smallmouth/spot cross is more common.

A smallmouth/spot cross is not uncommon but still rare enough that only a small portion of bass fisherman have ever seen one little on catch one. The largemouth/spot cross is very rare. If my memory is correct this is only the second picture I have seen of one. You caught a true trophy so I tip my hat to you.

I talked to some biologists at F&W, they told me a meanmouth can technically be a LMB/SMB cross or a SPB/SMB cross. Its likely this is a spotted bass X smallmouth. But they said it could be either. the fact that it did have a tooth patch is a pretty solid indication that it is most likely a spotted bass cross. The certainty remains that its definitely not a pure bred smallie.

If you see a 19 ft Tracker with a Wild Man following you around, in a very sneaky manner, not mind him....I hear he's CRAZY.........actually bat **** crazy .
That is a beautiful fish.......
