Its been several years since I dug any ginseng but based on my past experience the berries should have been bright red for the last few weeks. "Typically" in October the plant starts turning yellow. Late September and early October was always the easiest time for me to see it...red berries in September and starting to turn yellow in October.
Once you get in your head the shade of yellow that ginseng is this time of the year nothing else in woods looks like it save a very small buckeye tree and the occasional young poison ivy plant. Its been several years since I dug any ginseng but based on my past experience the berries should have been bright red for the last few weeks.
