Question on line for catfish and Ambassador 5000 reels

For many years I have used Stren fluorescent mono blue line for everything.

I recently bought 3 used Ambassador 5000 with catfish rods. I am going to respool for catfish. The reels hold 230 yds of 14 lb test.

Should I stick with my Stren blue mono or so you think there a better option for these reels and fish?

you might look onto big game 15 or 20#
It has controlled stretch for if the fish gets crazy on you.

Then again if you have been using the other for a long time and it is working for you maybe stick with that.

As previously mentioned if your have good luck with the line you have used for years then why switch. However I would consider looking into Trilene Big Game. I feel confident it it the most abrasion resistant mono out there. Plus I like the fact it's relatively inexpensive compared to other mono brands. It does however hold a lot of memory but after a couple cast the memory goes away.

I don't target catfish but I use it a lot for bass fishing. I have spools with 10,12,15 and 20 lb Big Game.

So much has changed that I haven't tried

There are braids, flouracarbons, spiderwires, dacron. They all claim to be smooth and strong.

There is a world of knowledge here, no need for me to find out the hard way.

I fish for cats quite a bit at night in the summer. My preference is the big game that has been mentioned in 20-30 pound test. I like the fluorescent green color as it is easy to see at night with little light. I fish with 6500's which are just a bit larger than the 5000. It is the toughest mono I have ever fished with period!!

I've become a big fan of the 20lb hi vis orange Stren Catfish mono, and Hi vis yellow Kast King mono in 20 or 30 lb

Try braid with mono leader. Not sure what happened with big game but I’ve abandoned it. Too many “freak” break offs. Heard similar story from others. Ande is all I use for leaders.

That’s boat fishing though. If you’re a bank guy I’d stay with mono for main line. Braid does not like rock...

Do you have to glue knots on braid?

Never used braid but seems like I remember people suggesting that you glue knots on something.

Several knots work fine with braid. I use palomar exclusively and snell my hooks. Just have to do everything in the right order.
