A Reprieve from August

Winter has come
To autumn this morning
The sun is low
Shadows are long
There’s ice in the buckets
Fields are frosted
Leaves still attached
Shimmer in a cold north breeze
The tractor sits idle
The cats are fluffed
Horses sleep in the shed
There’s talk of snow
And the Float & Fly
And the Thanksgiving table
Is yet to be set
But winter’s warning
Is a reprieve from August
And the glow
From the maple tree
Warms the heart
