    catching bait

I tried to catch bait on Cumberland with no success. It seemed the bait was about 60 feet deep and I think the net closed before it reached this depth. Any ideas?

Look up a taped net. It really makes a big difference.

Could have been any number of things.

I catch bait out on the lake and it has been getting more and more difficult for about six weeks and the bait that I catch has been getting smaller and smaller. Last year at this time I was catching nice good and big sized alewives down at 60'.

When I catch bait out on the lake I can't really have the light on for more than an hour given sometimes almost non existent sleep. As of this weekend my strategy was to just go after the small alewives and threadfins that are up higher. They are pretty small (2"-2.5") and can swim through the mesh in my 1/2 net and a lot of bait that would like to have kept I could see swim out of my 3/8' net. that net is really old and maybe the mesh is stretched out plus there are some good sized holes in it but they do swim through the intact mesh. My recommendation would be to go after the shallow small bait 40' and above. Turn the light off before you throw an let her go.

Even the small bait up high was not easy to catch but it was not hard either.

If you use a small hook like a Gamugatsu octopus #1 (not 1 0 ) the bait will stay alive on the hook plenty long to catch fish. The 2" alewives last longer than the larger theadfins. We caught a few fish using those small hooks and small baits this past weekend, the largest being 21 lbs.

    Hope this helps
