    Night fishing for crappie

    Hello everyone,,

Question for those who successfully fish at night:
    Is the bite better?
Do you catch bigger fish than during the day?
Do you use the green lights?

Thinking about more night fishing when the boat traffic is less and usually the wind dies.

I haven't done much night Crappie fishing in recent years, but here's my experience :

Is the bite better ? .... not necessarily, but it can be. It's definitely quieter, cooler, and the water is calmer (due to less boat traffic).

Do you catch bigger fish than during the day ? .... not particularly

Do you use green lights ? .... I've fished over green lights (once), but mostly over white lights. I've used Coleman gas lanterns, Starbrite submersible light, and a Berkley 12v Floating Light over the years ... and the floating light is the only one I still use. They all work to draw in baitfish, which is their primary function. LED lights are the way to go, nowadays, as they don't draw as much power from your battery as 12v lights & they're much brighter. But, I don't night fish for Crappie as much, nowadays, as I did decades ago ... so my floating light serves me when needed (I just take an extra battery for it).

I fish this way in the summer to escape the boat traffic and beat the heat. Its an effective method. Bad thing with this method is if you set up and the fish aren't there you have wasted a night. Now I have moved and re-set and had success but it is difficult. Waiting for the shad to come up and circle the light is what is frustrating. I've used both green and white and prefer the old floating white light over what I have tried. Green does seem to bring the plankton like stuff in more quickly which is supposed to in turn bring the shad. I catch all sizes when doing this and usually all species. Nothing like hooking a striper and it tangling up every line off the side of the boat. Its a good tool to have and can be reliable. I boated a lot of crappie and several good stripers this past summer. The occasional walleye and flathead didn't hurt my feelings either!!!
