    Liberty

By definition, “liberty” is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views. Or, it may be also defined as the power or scope to act as one pleases. Actually, the word “Liberty” itself can be fairly vague. The meaning of liberty is difficult to define in a legal sense. In its simplest terms, it means freedom, and is an essential right that a person has under Constitutional law. The word most commonly is used to mean being able to exercise a freedom, to take an action, or even think a certain way, without being prevented from doing so, and without being forced to do so. Liberty is not limited simply to being imprisoned. Liberty includes more than simply being free from bodily restraints, such as being imprisoned, but also includes things that a free people can do. For instance, the rights to enter into contracts and to be gainfully employed are both aspects of liberty.

There are five types of liberty. First is National Liberty, which means the liberty of the nation or the country, and it indicates unrestrained freedom to do whatever one likes or what some define as “unscientific use” of liberty. Natural Liberty means the absence of all restraints, an unrestrained freedom to do whatever one likes. However, one cannot act according to his will in society. If he is allowed to do whatever he likes, there will be chaos in society. The following words are engraved on the building of our Central Secretariat, Delhi: “Liberty does not descend upon a person. People must raise themselves to liberty. Liberty is a blessing that must be earned in order to be enjoyed”.

National Liberty exists where the nation or the community is independent and sovereign, thus National Liberty is another name for national sovereignty. Every state or nation wishes to remain free. And without independence the progress of the nation or the state is not possible. In an enslaved people cannot enjoy personal freedom and the comforts of life. And whenever imperialistic forces enslave a nation, the enslaved people will endure great sacrifices in their efforts to regain their independence.

Secondly, we have the concept of Civil Liberty, which means the Rule of Law. Civil Liberty consists in three differently expressed articles; physical freedom from injury or threat to the life, health and movement of the body; intellectual freedom for the expression of thought and belief, and practical freedom for the play of will and the exercise of choice in the general field of contractual action and relations with other persons. Civil liberty indicates that absence of those restraints, which are not reasonable and legitimate. It refers to liberty enjoyed by man in society. It denotes the enjoyment of our rights within the limits of law. The law guarantees the protection of Civil Liberty.

Thirdly, is the concept of Political liberty, which means liberty of citizens to participate in the political life and affairs of the state. It is the freedom of the individual to participate in the affairs of the state. It is also known as Constitutional Liberty, which includes minimum rights. These rights are: the right to vote; the right to contest elections; the right hold public office; the right to express political views and criticize the government; and the right to petition etc.

Fourthly, is the concept of Personal Liberty, which means the availability of those conditions in which the individual can act as he pleases without being under any type of arbitrary and illegitimate restraint. Every individual has the right not to permit any other individual to interfere in the affairs of his personal life. Every individual should have the liberty to dress, food, standard of living, marriages, education of children, etc. The state should not interfere in the personal matters of the individual. Such liberty is essential for the free development of human society.

Fifthly, is the concept of Economic Liberty, which means the liberty to earn one’s daily bread. In simple words, every individual, regardless of the distinction of caste, color and creed, should have liberty to earn his daily bread by fair means.

It is quite obvious even to the casual observer, though we do have conditions of unparalleled liberty and justice in the United States; we have at the same time very apparent injustices and conditions unrelated to liberty. The common man should be able to decide the destiny of a great nation by how that nation treats its citizens under its rule in the past and present. All citizens of this nation should experience liberty and justice equally, including freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and the right to equal treatment under the law.

To me liberty is a lot like freedom...you may have freedom or liberty but that does not mean you are free or you have the liberty to do whatever you want. All our actions have consequences, some are good and some are bad.
