Got to go against the grain guys lol . My grandpa built his own cricket box that put most bait shops to shame. We always had an ample supply and between the memories and down right good times with him catching bluegill, I’m going with crickets and Popeyes.

Easiest bait to use is a wax worm, or even a cricket ... since either can be bought at a bait shop. But there is one critter that puts both to shame, and that's a "Horseweed Worm". Not the easiest bait to find, and they're only available in the wild & only at certain times of the year.

Just be aware that you are also likely to encounter chiggers, wasps, and possibly snakes ... depending on where you find the stand of Giant Ragweed that these "worms" (larvae) are hiding in. Back country roads in farm territory, along fence lines is where we always went to get these critters.
