Fishing “Tip of the Week” Lake Guntersville Alabama
Week of 5/08/2006

The summer time patterns seem to be setting in, although the water temp is still in the mid to low 70’s. It appears in order to catch bass that one is going to have to fish early in the morning “Top Water” with a spook, buzz bait or Pop-R. Find the spotted grass areas in about 2 to 5 ft. of water. If the grass is to thick move on, look for holes in the grass edges where the fish can ambush a Top-Water bait. Past early morning the bite will get tougher, you will have to start looking for creek beds, grass lines with irregular shapes and edges, when you find them the next trick will be to figure out what will trigger a bite. This could be a variety of different soft plastics, or crank baits, it could take a heavy spinner bait being worked at the edge of the grass line, or pulling it off the humps. Try different weights and sizes on your baits, most often the fish will be near the bottom in the grass line this time of year, but suspending bass could be the key.
The grass line edges also have different effects on the bass, this time of year a gradual edge should be the bite producer, however a very quick dropping edge if the fish are suspending could be the key. Regardless you will have to fish hard and smart to get the afternoon bite, pray for cloud cover it always helps.
