    Painting an old jon boat

I have a 1989 flat bottom crappie boat that is in need of a paint job. the paint on it now is dull and its got a few rough spots on it. i am going to put new seats and line the whole inside with carpet so im not worried about painting the inside just the bottom and sides. my quetion is can i rough sand the old paint and clean it up and primer and paint with any kind of paint or do i need to by some kind of special paint? any input on this would be appreciated, thanks

RE: Painting an old jon boat

i did a small one years ago, clean it real good and use on of those green scrubbie pads and rough it up til there is no shine on it.prime the bare spots with grey oxide primer and use a good enamel paint it will not come off unless you hit something hard enough to take it off.if you do the bottom rough it up with something a little more coarse like corse steel wool, wash it good and rub it down with laquer thinner and it will work fine.

RE: Painting an old jon boat

I re-painted an old boat before, but it was made of Fiberglass and only 8' long. I also roughed up the bottom and sides and after putting on a coat of primer I applied a coat of Enamel Gray paint with a brush. Looked really good after I was done and stayed like new for a long time.
