I was thinking about trying crawdads. I read a report that said the flatheads between 12"-24" eat mostly crawdads. I have caught a few on cut bait, but I want to get a little more serious this year. Thanks.

I fish mainly the ohio river for cat fish. I fish tournaments about every weekend. For flatheads I mainly use live creek chubs, blue gills, or big wild shinners. I use only cut bait to catch blues and channels. good luck
I fish for flatheads and use large lively baitfish.
I target fish over 40 pounds and these fish are truly a worthy adversary on rod and reel.
Large suckers, rockbass, and small carp will all be eaten by these trophy fish.

Live Herring Shad. If you can gather bait in the afternoon, and fish that night when the big flatheads come up in the creeks,in the summertime.
If you can find them, I have had my best luck with big creek shiners.I caught my two biggest flatheads using them. One was 35 and the other was 25 pounds. Good luck
Try big bluegill on mud flats next to river channel!
Live 7 to 8 inch bluegill work best for big flatheads. When the rivers get high fish real close to the bank, maybe 5 to 10 feet from shore, use lots of lead to hold the rig in place, and make sure you have a nice stout rod with thick line. Remember its not the length of your rod, but it's the backbone of the shaft and sensitivity of the tip.
Cut baits work from time to time, but flatheads like live bait much more. I have caught a few nice flatheads on crankbaits, so they prefer the live moving bait.
