It's almost for certain a bowfin, also called grinnell, mudfish and dogfish. The bowfin has a couple of little "whiskers" on it's upper "lip" close to it's nostrils. Check out this site:

i nkow exactly what it was.. i catch them more in the river than in the lake.. it was a grennel im not sure how to spell it but that is what it was.

I'm gonna just HAVE to go with the alligator gar/catfish cross. That's definately what it was.
