    Elkhorn Creek

Just wanted to see if anyone in the area of Elkhorn Creek have fished it yet. I will start going when it warms up a little bit. I usually catch a lot of rock bass or red eyes, if anyone has any advice for catching smallmouth in creeks let me know.

Fished it yet? Never quit. :-)

Caught several nice ones on January 2.

In the next couple weeks the smallmouth ought to start moving out of their winter holes and getting more active. Deep pockets above and below large riffles are a good place to start.

Thanks for the response, where abouts are you fishing? I am a student at UK so I go down towards Midway to fish. Got any pointers on lures or baits? I am probably going to go in the next week or so I will let you know how I did.

I usually fish the North Fork or the main creek below the Forks on US 460. I am blessed to have several landowners who are kind enough to let me walk through their fields to get to some less pressured areas.

4" inch smoke or black worms are killer. Sometimes you can catch the redeye ganged up in pre-spawn and slay them with a white Mr. Twister or Beetle Spin in deep rocky areas with moderate current.

I also use small spider jigs, Rapalas (jointed if it's overcast - nothing more fun than seeing them blow up on it). It's also hard to go wrong with a small Rebel grasshopper (chartreuse/green) or crawdad (brown/orange) in the deeper pools.

    Tear 'em up!

They're already there.....the big flood moved everything.

    RE: Elkhorn Creek

Had a nice first wade of the year late Sunday. I was amazed at how high and fast the flow of water was even though rain was not that recent. Had two 12-14" smallies on a smaller white spinnerbait early on. The flow made it hard to fish some spots so I walked to a deeper pool. I started fishing smaller plastics, like a beaver, around heavy wood cover. Caught the largest LM I've ever caught in the Elkhorn-4lb.4oz.-18". About three casts later caught a 3lb.4oz.LM. I should have retied at this point-someday I'll learn that lesson-but I was too excited to make the next cast. Hooked another good fish that broke off right at the hook eye. I was fishing 8lb.line. At the end of only about 2 1/2 hrs. had about 13 fish. It was a blast! At least 9 of those came from that one wood pile that gave the fish some slack water behind the wood. By the way the two big females were loaded with eggs.

    NIce report.

I was going to go, but my grandmother passing last weekend and the Flu-Bug this weekend has put me on the side line. I will however, spent the whole month of April floating though.
OUr annual get-together in the third weekend in April..

Man that's great to hear! At Forks last night the water looked a bit high even now. With the warmup/clouds they're calling for, the end of next week may be prime time.

    RE: Billy,

    JBC,
I just checked the streamflow. (361cfs)-. It's looks great for this time of yr. We went all summer/fall last year looking at a trickle it's hard to judge. If I were you, I'd hit it in the AM barring any downpours.

Can you float the elkhorn? I have a 14ft. with 9 hp. If so, where are the access points.
