    Not Great

Went today to float the upper whitewater, fishing was fair, not good or great. I landed about 6 smallies on the trip, all about 10 inches, on a inline spinner. Tried to thorw top and crankbaits, neither did the trick. LOTS of shad jumping, but nothing ever produced. Fished seem to be in the middle.

    RE: Not Great

I was in the lower end this weekend. Really didn't fish a lot. The water was still up a little and had just a tad bit of color. The smallmouth are on the bed.
I didn't see anyone catching any white bass this weekend. I don't know if they've left for the river or have went further upstream. They, along with the shad push upstream, may have all the fish fat and full.
But the canoers and kayakers are out there and it will only get more crowded as the weather gets nicer. Get on the water early and pick and choose your spots.

I caught a white bass on the whitewater strech, it really surprised me, I never knew they were present on the Elkhorn.

Read an article recently released by KDFW stating that the drought last year was a very good thing for the Elkhorn. They went on to say the spawn for 2005 for the smallmouth was excellent and they look for a great future for alot of Kentucky streams. Let's hope this is true and many tightlines from them ole brown fish comes our way.

whites run into elkhorn every spring to spawn. there may be a few stragglers left, but i,d say most of them should be back in the kentucky by now.

This, however, is the first yr of many that they've been noticed. The KDFWR has done a great job in thier stockings. Hopefully, they'll be a little bigger next season. One thing's for sure though meathogs can't beat the bank where we fish....

    RE: Not Great

I havent seen as many carp and drum on the Elkhorn the last few years as I have seen in years past. Is there any explination to that? I would think the larger rough fish may help the smallmouth population, seeing competition generally produces larger fish.

They're in there, just not making themselves noticed right now. Once the carp start spawning in the next 6wks you'll see more signs such as muddy bank clouds, noisy brush piles, and herds of them passing about 1 ft away from you.

The drums are pretty good hiders. I caught on about 4lbs 3 wks ago and thought I had a big smallie until it finally surface between my pontoons on my ODC>..LOL!!!
